‘Safe and strong’: Netanyahu unites with other world leaders to support Trump and salute his team after harrowing White House Correspondents’ dinner

Everyone agrees that violence is not the answer, if only it applied to war.

World leaders are uniting in support of Donald Trump and his team following a harrowing shooting incident that disrupted the White House Correspondents’ dinner. The event, which was meant to be a celebration of the press, turned into a scene of chaos when a gunman breached a security checkpoint. The incident prompted an immediate evacuation of the president, and per Politico, the global community has responded with a chorus of condemnation.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was one ally to voice his shock on X.  “Sara and I were shocked by the attempted assassination of President @realDonaldTrump last night in Washington, DC. We are relieved that the President and the First Lady are safe and strong. We send our wishes for a full and speedy recovery to the wounded police officer and salute the US Secret Service for their swift and decisive action.”

The sentiment of relief and solidarity was echoed by other international figures. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney shared his thoughts, stating, “I am relieved that the President, the First Lady, and all guests are safe following reports of gunfire at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington tonight. Political violence has no place in any democracy and my thoughts are with all those who have been shaken by this disturbing event.”

Some of the personal accounts from the journalists have been heartbreaking

European leaders also rushed to condemn the violence. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen took to X to express her relief that Trump and the attendees were safe, emphasizing that “Violence has no place in politics, ever.”

Similarly, European Council President António Costa described the scenes at the dinner as “deeply unsettling” while highlighting the effective response from law enforcement. He said, “Political violence has no place in public life and must be firmly rejected.”

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas also weighed in. She noted that an event focused on celebrating a free press “should never become a scene of fear.”

The response from national leaders across Europe was swift and firm. U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed that he was “shocked by the scenes” that unfolded in Washington, labeling any attack on democratic institutions or the freedom of the press as unacceptable.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez offered a concise condemnation, writing that “Violence is never the way.” He also stated, “Humanity will only advance through democracy, coexistence, and peace.”

French President Emmanuel Macron extended his full support to the U.S. president. His criticism was simple: the targeting of the leader is “unacceptable.”

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed “full solidarity” with Trump and everyone else present, asserting that “No political hatred can find space in our democracies.” She further added that leaders “will not allow fanaticism to poison the places of free debate and information.”

The incident itself involved a lone actor who charged a security checkpoint outside the Washington Hilton hotel. The individual, who was armed with a shotgun and other weapons, engaged in gunfire with security forces. Inside the ballroom, the situation became tense as Trump and other dignitaries were quickly removed from the stage.

While the president initially expressed a desire to continue the evening, the idea was abandoned as security concerns grew. During a press conference held shortly after the evacuation, Trump remarked that he would not let “these sick people … change the fabric of our life.” He also took a moment to praise the rapid response of the agents.

Video footage posted by Trump showed the suspect running past the barricades before being tackled by agents. The suspect, Cole Allen, a 31-year-old man from California, was taken into custody without injury and is currently being evaluated at a hospital.

Investigations have revealed that the suspect was checked in as a guest at the hotel where the dinner took place. U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro stated that the man will face charges for assaulting a federal officer with a dangerous weapon and using a firearm during a crime of violence. He is expected to be arraigned in a federal court on Monday.

While the investigation remains ongoing, Pirro did not rule out the possibility of terrorism charges, noting that “This individual was intent on doing as much harm and as much damage as he could.”

In the meantime, people have been wondering if the attack might be a setup by Trump, mainly to push his Ballroom through the legal snarls it is trapped in. Additionally, all the kerfuffle with security is now making the British government question whether the Royal trip to the US should stay on the calendar.
