A newlywed couple tried the window-and-aisle seat trick on their honeymoon flight. Then they filmed the entire gamble: ‘Risked it all’

A newlywed couple posted a TikTok video showing them trying a seating tactic on a honeymoon flight. Beth Jeffers, who posts as @bethjeffersx, appeared in the clip with blonde hair and a light blue hoodie, next to a man with short dark hair. On-screen text in the video said, “We risked it all and tried the window and aisle seat plane hack on our honeymoon.”  The video gained 3.7 million views, 325,600 likes, and over 400 comments.

The video opened inside an airplane cabin as the pair looked at the camera with wide eyes. It then showed the man in a window seat looking out the window, with the middle seat next to him empty. Later shots showed Jeffers stretching her legs across that middle seat.

In the final scene, the man sat in the aisle seat beside her while she kept her legs across the middle. He smiled and clapped, and on-screen text read, “IT WORKED.” Jeffers wrote in the caption, “We tried the window and seat plane hack on our flight and it worked!! best flight ever and I was able to stretch my legs and sleep across the seats! Obvs If this didn’t work we would just have been separate but we watch our own movies anyway lol.”

Travel writers and viewers have described mixed reactions to the seating tactic

The tactic involves two people booking a window seat and an aisle seat and leaving the middle open. The idea, as travel writers have described it, is that many solo passengers prefer not to take a middle seat, so the row may stay empty. If someone is assigned to the middle, some couples say the person in the aisle will move over so the pair can sit together and the other traveler can take the aisle.

Travel blogger Dan Miller writes that the approach can be acceptable if the aisle passenger actually moves when someone needs the middle seat. The same writer said it is not acceptable for a couple to stay split and talk around the person in the middle for the whole flight.

The writer also described a personal Southwest strategy of choosing an aisle next to a window passenger and hoping the middle stays empty, while still getting up if someone needs that seat. Such seat disputes can escalate quickly, as when a United flight descended into a shouting match over a seat swap.

In a separate article by Mamamia, Catie Powers wrote about another TikTok account. Powers said a flyer named Shreya stitched an earlier video and described boarding a flight from San Francisco to New York. Shreya said a man was sitting in her assigned seat, and a woman in the aisle asked her to take the window so the couple could sit together. Shreya said she offered the aisle instead because she gets up often and has claustrophobia.

Shreya said the woman replied, “Well. I’m going to sit in the seat that I paid for.” Shreya said she then asked for the middle so she would only have to climb over one person, and the woman said the couple would get up when needed. Shreya said a line formed behind her, so she took the window. She said she got up three times and the couple did not stand, instead shifting to the side.

Powers wrote that many commenters on Shreya’s video sided with her. One suggested answering with the same line about sitting in the paid seat. Others asked why couples do not book two aisle seats across the aisle from each other. Points with a Crew made a similar point that two aisle seats in the same row, or aisles across from each other, can give both people space without leaving a middle seat open between them.

Jeffers’ video presented the tactic as a success on that flight, with the middle seat unused. Commenters on her post described a range of views about whether the approach is fair. Some said they book middle seats on purpose when flying alone and refuse to switch.

One commenter wrote, “if I’m travelling by myself I purposely book those middle seats and refuse to switch.” This debate over seat-swapping etiquette has played out in other scenarios, such as when a woman refused to swap seats for a couple on a Jetstar flight.

Others said the problem is not booking the seats but refusing to move if the middle fills. One commenter wrote, “If the middle seat gets filled AND one of you doesn’t switch with them, then you guys are the worst type of people. Nothing is worse than sitting between a couple who talks over you and passes food over you. It’s SO rude.”

Another described sitting between a couple who used the same setup. That commenter wrote, “I sat in between a couple doing this. Was the most miserable flight ever they where so mad at me the whole time and kept reaching over my face and talking to each other the whole.”

Some suggested different booking choices. One commenter wrote, “Me and my husband always book the aisle seats in the same row. THAT is a better hack I promise.” Another wrote, “We book 2 isle seats across from each other so we both get legroom.” A few comments were shorter. One commenter wrote, “This is so toxic.” Another wrote, “why don’t you just buy all three.”
