An Arizona server’s viral TikTok about a steak order gone wrong is sparking debate online about steak temperatures, customer expectations, and the difference between chain restaurants and high-end steakhouses.
TikTok creator Elizabeththorne (@elizabeththorne_) shared the story in a video viewed about 220k times that quickly drew thousands of comments from restaurant workers and steak lovers alike. In the clip, Thorne explained that she was serving a table of eight diners, all of whom ordered filet steaks. When she reached the final customer, she asked how he wanted his steak cooked.
“I know what a medium rare steak is”
In the post, Thorne says, “He tells me he wants it medium rare.” But after overhearing him mention that he liked “a pink center steak,” she decided to clarify the restaurant’s standards. “I let him know, hey, like, our medium rare steak is red. It’s not pink,” she recalled.
According to Thorne, the customer seemed annoyed by the explanation. “He was like, ‘I know what a medium rare steak is,’” she said.
To avoid confusion, she apologized and reiterated that the restaurant’s medium rare preparation would have “a red center.” The customer again insisted he understood. When the food arrived, however, the issue resurfaced almost immediately.
After cutting into the steak, the diner reportedly joked, “Did you even kill the cow before giving it to me?” “He’s like, ‘This is still moving. This is so rare. I wanted a pink center,” Thorne said.
The server reminded him of their earlier exchange. “Remember when I told you medium rare is gonna be a red center, and you told me, you know what medium rare is?” she recalled saying.
The customer still disagreed, insisting the steak was too rare. Thorne took it back to the kitchen to be cooked longer. After the second attempt, he said again it was undercooked. Only after a third trip to the kitchen did the diner approve the steak. “He’s like, ‘See, this is perfect,'” she said.
“I think he was embarrassed”
In the video caption, Thorne speculated that the customer may have been reluctant to order a more well-done steak from the start. “I think he was embarrassed to order Medium Well,” she wrote. “ALSO, I can already see the comments telling me to just ring in Medium next time. He ordered Medium Rare so that’s what I rang in because you can always bring a steak up but you can’t bring one down.”
That final point resonated with many restaurant workers in the comments section, where users debated steak terminology and how different restaurants interpret doneness levels. The viral clip also prompted broader conversations about how customers order steaks and whether diners always understand standard temperature definitions before sending dishes back.
One widely shared comment read: “High end steak house Med Rare is consistent what you describe. He’s describing Applebees med rare.” Food and restaurant sites frequently describe medium-rare steak as having a red center surrounded by a pink outer layer.
The remark highlighted a recurring theme throughout the discussion. Many commenters argued that upscale steakhouses tend to serve true medium-rare steaks with a warm red center, and chain restaurants often cook steaks more thoroughly to match broader customer expectations. Similar debates have appeared online for years, especially involving chain-restaurant steak orders. The video joins a long line of restaurant TikToks that have turned ordinary dining misunderstandings into viral entertainment, especially when servers and customers clash over steak doneness.
