A bartender said she was left scrambling to explain herself after a drink order she thought was harmless turned into an awkward moment involving race. Brittany Norris, who posts under the username @brittanynorris_, shared the story in a TikTok video that has drawn over 1.2 million views.
Norris said in her TikTok video that the incident happened while she was working as a bartender and serving a married couple, whom she described as a white woman and a Black man. According to Norris, the couple ordered High Noons, a canned alcoholic seltzer brand.
Norris said the woman asked for pineapple flavor, while the man told her to “surprise me.” She recalled telling him, “I get the goods,” before going to prepare the drinks.

Norris said she returned with the pineapple High Noon for the woman and handed the man a watermelon-flavored one. She described his immediate reaction in the video, imitating him saying, “Eugh no no no no no no no! I love watermelon!”
Norris said she quickly understood that his response was not simply about the flavor itself. She said she realized he believed she had picked watermelon because of a racial stereotype associated with Black people, rather than because she thought he would enjoy the taste.
In the video, Norris acted out how she tried to explain herself in the moment. She said she told him, “I didn’t get it because I thought you would like watermelon. That’s not what that’s about. That’s not… that’s not… that’s not… that’s not… that’s not… I like watermelons! I love you!”
The video does not indicate how the man responded after Norris’s explanation, and no further details about the couple were shared. Service workers accidentally making a situation worse while trying to correct it is not unheard of, as seen in a separate incident involving a Starbucks order that went wrong.
The video’s comment section included a range of reactions from viewers.
