TikTok creator Marco Scola says a missing item at a McDonald‘s drive-thru led to an unexpected exchange with two employees. He offered to pay for the item separately, but says they told him he would have to drive around and place another order.
In the video, he says he stopped at the drive-thru around 8 p.m. His daughter’s bedtime had pushed dinner late. The order came up one Diet Coke short. A young employee checked a monitor and told him the drink was never rung up. He then checked his receipt and agreed. According to Marco, the guy at the register “did not ring me up for a Diet Coke.” He adds that the drink was on the screen.
So he offered a simple fix. He handed over his card and said, “Charge whatever you want. I would like a Diet Coke.” He says her reaction caught him off guard. “She looked at my card as if I handed her the bubonic plague on a platter.” She told him, “You’re gonna have to drive around and order again.”
Why the McDonald’s employees refused the quick fix
A manager reportedly gave the same answer. With about 20 cars behind him, he says he didn’t want to “drive around” and start over after already waiting about 10 minutes. “I just want to get home and have my food and my Diet Coke,” he says.
Some commenters who say they work or worked at the chain offered their own explanations. Customers have picked up a lot of ordering advice from crew members online in recent months. One self-described former manager wrote that “the presenting window has no cash or payment processing option so taking payment there is a no go.” The same commenter said looping around would have been faster.
Another commenter, who also said they manage a McDonald’s, described a different approach. “Our policy is to give you the diet coke (no charge) apologize and tell you have a good night.” Neither claim can be checked here. So the response may depend on the store or manager on duty.
The creator does not blame the workers. “I know it’s not that kid’s fault,” he says. That is his own read, and the video offers no proof. That is his own read, and the video offers no proof. His guess about thin crews is not new, though, since other customers have described stores so short on staff that diners end up doing part of the job themselves.
He also says he is not telling anyone to bend the rules. “I’m not going to encourage anyone to do something that might cause them to lose their job,” he says. The price of the meal bothered him, too. He says it “used to cost my family and I 16 bucks” and now runs “close to $30.”
Not everyone sided with him. One commenter wrote, “We seemed to have lost the ability for empathy and have gained the ability to belittle an employee for following their company guidelines.” The creator did call the cashier a “kind young woman” at the start of his story.
In the end, he says the drink hardly mattered. “It had no effect on my life or my day,” he says, and “I just wanted to rant.” He left with his food and no Diet Coke.
