A short TikTok from Rachel Lately, filmed at a restaurant counter, shows an employee handing her a drink. The whole clip lasts about six seconds and has picked up more than 17,000 views.
The order is a Mexican martini. On-screen text reads “imagine ordering a Mexican martini and they hand you this”. The creator then holds up a pale yellow cocktail in a short, clear plastic cup. It has a red seasoned rim and a small pick, making the plastic cup stand out even more. The caption says “not the sad plastic cup”. She doesn’t complain to the employee or say anything about the drink in the clip.
A Mexican martini is essentially a margarita with olive brine, and the drink is closely tied to Austin, Texas. According to the Austin American-Statesman, one order brings a shaker that yields at least a couple of glasses’ worth. Diners familiar with the Austin version may therefore expect both a glass and a shaker.
The serving choice raises questions
The video never says where this happened, though several commenters identify the restaurant as Loro. It is also unclear why the drink came in a plastic cup or whether it was meant to go. The clip doesn’t answer either way.
Small counter moments like this one tend to draw attention online, and the thread follows that pattern. Many commenters were more bothered by the missing shaker than the plastic cup. “If it is not in an ice-filled shaker, I don’t want it!!”
Another commenter offered a possible reason. “For the demand of tini Tuesday we do not have enough glassware,” she wrote. She added, “And wouldn’t have anywhere to store it if we did.” Her wording suggests she works at the restaurant, but that cannot be verified.
A third commenter pushed back on the idea that plastic is standard. She wrote, “I’ve never seen this in a plastic cup!” and posted a photo of her own drink in a stemmed glass with an olive pick. If the commenter does work there, her explanation would suggest the plastic cup was a busy-night workaround rather than the usual presentation. Only the restaurant can say for sure.
The cup wasn’t the only thing commenters questioned. One person said the happy hour setup was confusing. “They sat us at a table during happy hour but we had to go to the counter to order,” they wrote. The commenter said they were told refills could be ordered at the table, but no one came back, and the line eventually got so long that they gave up on another drink.
