Hobby Lobby shopper holds up two seemingly identical Hello Kitty boxes priced $1 apart: ‘Like why would yall do that’

TikTok creator Adriena said she had just walked into a Hobby Lobby store when she started filming. She turned the camera toward a Hello Kitty display and noticed two seemingly identical products with different price stickers.

She picked up two Hello Kitty light-up wall decor boxes and held them side by side. One box was tagged at $10.99, while the other read “YOUR PRICE $11.99.” “It’s the same product,” she said. The video is titled “Like why would yall do that,” which is essentially the question she is asking while holding up the two boxes.

The packaging otherwise looked identical. Both boxes showed the same Hello Kitty design and battery-powered lights, with several more sitting together on the same shelf. The different price tags may come down to old and new stock

The clip doesn’t show a receipt, a checkout screen or a response from a Hobby Lobby employee. It shows the two price stickers side by side, with Adriena questioning why the prices are different.

A 2024 Best Life report cited commenters and TikTokers who said they were former Hobby Lobby employees attributing price differences between identical items to new shipments arriving with updated prices while older stock remains on the shelves. That can leave seemingly identical products carrying different price stickers. A similar pricing issue came up at Target, where a shopper found a Mario backpack that rang up differently.

Commenters had plenty to say about the price difference. “so as someone who shops there all the time it’s different shipments so different prices!” one commenter wrote. Shoppers have also reported finding different prices for seemingly identical products at other retailers. A Walmart shopper recently said she found the same shoe priced lower for men than for women.

Another commenter, who said they work at the store, wrote, “i work for hobby lobby and i want yall to know, sometimes the prices change when we get them in but we’re also taking returns constantly.” They also claimed that store policy is to use the cheaper price when two items are priced differently, though Best Life noted that Hobby Lobby’s FAQ does not address in-store price differences and that shoppers have reported mixed results on price matching. One offered a simpler explanation: “new stock vs old stock….. kinda simple. prices on items change frequently.” 

It’s unclear whether the two boxes share the same product number or whether one of the stickers was outdated. The video ends with Adriena holding both boxes, leaving the $1 price difference unexplained.
