Kelly Clarkson calling Art of Play a liar wasn’t the end of the story. It was the beginning of a credibility test

Fame and size do not prove honesty.

Kelly Clarkson first said she felt looked down on at Art of Play, a shop in Brooklyn. A feeling like that is hard to prove or disprove. A customer can leave a store sincerely upset, and the staff can still believe they did nothing wrong.

Then the store shared its side, and Clarkson went further. She wrote, “So you’re not only rude, you’re also a liar.” That is a different kind of claim. It is not about how she felt. It is about what was said in the shop that day.

The store says the bird she asked about, named Molly, is attached to the wall and is not for sale. It later said staff told her a near twin owned by a Seattle artist could be bought for $15,000. Clarkson says an employee pointed to a $15,000 price tag and offered to find her something similar. Both sides may be sincere, and both may remember it differently.

Neither side should get instant trust

Many people seem to lean toward the small shop. Co-owner Adam Rubin told Inside Edition, “Kelly Clarkson has put us in danger.” He also claimed staff have faced threats from angry fans. If that is true, it is a real harm. But being small does not make someone right. The store’s first statement said the bird was not for sale, and the $15,000 twin only came up in a second post. That does not prove anyone lied, but it is easy to see why some people raised their eyebrows.

Others appear to lean toward the star, who accused staff of insulting her. Director Joseph Kahn, who has worked with her, said she is “the nicest person I’ve ever worked with.” That counts for something, but he is a past coworker, not a neutral witness. Being kind in general does not mean a person heard every word correctly in a busy shop. PR expert Evan Nierman told Business Insider that “this fight is more about feelings than facts.”

Security video has been posted by podcaster Pablo Torre. It apparently shows she was inside for under five minutes and spoke with an employee, with both of them pointing at the bird. There is no sound, so the video cannot show who said what. It may not settle anything.

Reddit is split in the same way. One user asked, “Why are you accepting one side’s account of an interaction?” Another replied, “Last I saw, there was evidence of a $15000 price tag on the item in question, which completely destroys the stores side of things.” A third pushed back: “That’s not what it was. It was an artist listing showing what it would cost to get the same or similar bird. The bird there was installed.”

Reputation is doing a lot of work in these threads. Many of these commenters are defending the star who cancelled her talk show. One commenter wrote, “Kelly also doesn’t have a reputation as a s–t stirrer.” Another added, “She’s not exactly known for causing drama.” A different user doubted the video: “If it doesn’t have audio, it doesn’t prove s–t.”

Then there is the fan problem. One commenter wrote, “When someone with millions of fans decides to unleash them on a small business this is to be expected.” That may be fair, whoever turns out to be right. For now, the honest answer is that nobody outside that shop knows exactly what was said.
