LA woman discovers her therapist had a secret past. Then she realizes why their sessions felt so strange: ‘I was like, what?’

The therapist was too brief for her.

Let an influencer tell it, and they would have you believe that very few people can truly fathom the magnitude of a public breakup. Los Angeles-based TikTok influencer Soph Mosca became the poster child for that when she went to see a therapist to talk about her very public breakup.

Mosca said her issue quickly became the feeling that there was no way her therapist could understand what such a public breakup could feel like. As it turns out, her therapist was allegedly Elin Nordegren. And there was probably nobody in the world better equipped to understand that than Nordegren.

For most people, a romantic breakup is one of the easiest things to relate to. There have been books, movies and songs dedicated to proving just that.

The therapist was too brief for her

Mosca said that whenever she told her therapist how her fans’ comments or news reports about her breakup were making her emotional turmoil even worse, the therapist would simply respond with brief follow-up questions.

Mosca explained, “I felt like she just wasn’t understanding what a public break-up would feel like. I felt a disconnect. Like maybe she just didn’t know what it felt to be in the public eye. Maybe she just couldn’t comprehend it.”

The influencer said this eventually led to her leaving the therapist’s practice and seeking help from other specialists. But afterward, she decided to look behind the curtain and find out who this person actually was. She was stunned when she allegedly discovered that Nordegren was the ex-wife of Tiger Woods.

The comments were lively. One user wrote, “I could never be a therapist like wdym I cant share a bit of personal lore with a client who’s going through the same thing. she’s so strong for holding that one in.”

Another pointed out the intended irony, writing, “There was only ONE therapist in the entire world who could’ve understood what you were going through. This story is insane.”

Even therapists started chiming in, saying that this was not as uncommon as it might seem. One user wrote, “Therapist here! It’s SUPER common to be going through the same experiences our clients are going through. I was prepped for it in grad school. It’s funny and awful at the same time.”

Following her highly publicized divorce from Woods after his multiple affairs filled the tabloids for almost a year, Nordegren enrolled at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, to pursue higher education. She eventually graduated in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and even delivered the commencement speech, which received considerable media attention at the time.

You can never know someone’s past

She has since lived a life largely out of the media’s eye, working in the mental health field. But you can’t always leave your past behind you. Sometimes, it comes back to revisit you in the most unlikely ways.

For most of us, however, this was simply a lesson that you never truly know who someone is or what they’ve been through. Mosca chose the therapist she felt she clicked with best, and that is her right. But as far as assuming someone’s past based on how they present themselves, that’s never a good idea.
