NJ woman almost dies in TJ Maxx when sirens start blaring. She says goodbye to her husband but staff still pitches her a credit card: ‘the audacity’

Panic hit the store, then a sales pitch.

A New Jersey woman said she thought she might die inside a TJ Maxx store after a tornado warning sent shoppers into a shelter-in-place, only to have a dressing room attendant ask her about a store credit card minutes later. The woman, who posts under the handle @unsolicitedsarcasm and goes by Stefany, shared the story in a TikTok video captioned, “They’re relentless with that TJ Maxx credit card.”

Stefany said in her TikTok video that she had gone to the store to make a return and decided to browse a little, saying she did “the obligatory few laps of TJ Maxx because you never know what you’re going to find.” She said she had three or four items in her cart when sirens suddenly went off throughout the store.

She described the alert as the “loudest screeching siren” and said every phone in the store began beeping at the same time. According to Stefany, the alert announced a tornado warning and told shoppers to shelter in place for 30 minutes, even though it reportedly was not raining when she first walked in.

She said the manager held store door shut as storm hit

Stefany said she went into “full panic mode” once the alert went off, though she claimed other shoppers around her did not seem concerned and “continues shopping about.”

She said she called her husband on FaceTime, telling him, “this is it, dying in a TJ Maxx,” which she described as “very on brand” but not how she expected her life to end. Retail workers are often expected to maintain sales focus even during emergencies, a pressure that extends beyond clothing stores, as seen when a Taco Bell in Indiana refused a customer’s order while a tornado was approaching.

She said her husband stayed on the call and looked around his own surroundings to tell her the safest places to take shelter, since she said she had never experienced a tornado before. Stefany said she ultimately decided to wait out the storm in the store’s dressing room area.

As she made her way there, she said the storm hit, with wind “howling” and rain “pouring through” part of the store. She said the store manager appeared to be holding the front door shut by hand to keep the storm from blowing in further, describing a puddle forming at the entrance as “a pond if you will.” She called the move “very unsafe” if a tornado had actually touched down, though she did not say whether the manager was injured or whether a tornado made contact with the building.

Once Stefany reached the dressing room, she said the attendant asked how many items she was bringing in. Stefany said she tried to “play it cool” despite her panic. After giving the attendant a number, she said, “She gives me my number and then has the audacity to look at me and say, ‘Do you have the TJ Maxx credit card?’”

Stefany responded to the question by saying, “Ma’am, I just called my husband to say goodbye and I love him because there is a tornado watch in the area. We are on a shelter-in-place. The whole store could be sucked up in a tornado right now and you’re trying to sell me a credit card?”

She ended the video by noting the card’s rewards program, saying, “they have a great point system, so if you don’t have it, you should look into it.” The stress of such incidents can be compounded by other workplace issues, as a former employee alleged she was fired for exposing secrets kept from shoppers.

The video drew a large response in the comments section, including from people who said they had worked in retail. One commenter wrote, “Former TJMaxx manager here, she deserves a REACH card for asking in the fitting room,” to which Stefany replied, “Is a REACH card some sort of reward? Because yes! Dressing room was a first for me, and she had zero hesitation.” The same commenter followed up, “It is.”

Another commenter who said they work at a store in the Midwest wrote, “Listen if we don’t ask the higher ups yell at us. And they legit DO NOT care about any excuses why. And as someone that works at one in the Midwest, a tornado is sadly is an excuse.” Stefany replied, “Tornados are for quitters.”

Other commenters framed the dressing room attendant’s timing as a sign of dedication to sales goals. One wrote, “That’s a sales woman,” and Stefany responded, “Honestly, props to her. Corporate should be proud.” Another commenter, identified as a former retail worker, wrote, “Rain, sleet, snow, tornado…they have to ask.”

It was not immediately clear which TJ Maxx location Stefany was referring to or whether a tornado ultimately touched down in the area at the time of the alert.
