A Sam’s Club employee has gone viral on TikTok for all the wrong reasons. A woman visited the retail store with her daughter, who had recently undergone open-heart surgery and still has difficulty walking. But what should have been a routine shopping trip quickly turned into an uncomfortable interaction. Now the mother wants to know why an adult would feel the need to “check” her child.
The mom’s username on the platform is @rollinwithfaith11, and she explained that her intention is not to make the employee’s life harder than it already is. There have been plenty of stories about social media posts leading to workers losing their livelihoods, and the creator made it clear that she had no intention of making this employee the latest example.
Instead, she said she simply wanted to encourage people to show each other a little more respect. She explained that when they entered the store, she realized her daughter could not propel her own wheelchair because her recent surgery meant she was still on sternal precautions.
The daughter doesn’t appear visibly disabled
Her mother suggested she use one of the store’s mobility scooters because, after all, that’s exactly what they are there for. Importantly, she added that she also reminded her daughter not to treat the scooter like a “toy.” But because her daughter does not immediately appear visibly disabled, she says they often face questions whenever they use one.
The creator doesn’t seem to mind people asking questions. Her issue was that the employee saw her standing right beside her daughter but still chose to direct all of his questions to the child instead. She said in her video, “He proceeded to ask her, ‘Is your leg broke? Is your arm broke?’ Etcetera. Okay, I have a problem with it. Because I was right next to her. He could have asked me. He didn’t have to confront my child.”
She went on to explain that she made the post simply so people would understand her perspective if they happened to see the clip circulating elsewhere online. She insisted she was not trying to be rude to the elderly employee.
Still, the comments were split. One user wrote, “Respectfully this man just asked you a question, he didn’t know this. But I bet that interaction would’ve been a lot shorter if you just would’ve said what you told us at the beginning of this video.”
Others, however, understood exactly where she was coming from. One commenter wrote, “Is everyone missing the fact that he asked the child first and not the mother? There is absolutely no reason to come for this mother. She does not have to explain herself or what is going on with her child. You’re a great mom.”
You only see one side of the story
There were clearly two forces at play here: an employee who may have believed he was simply doing his job, and a mother who was understandably protective of her child—especially given that her daughter’s medical condition is not immediately visible. Conflicts like this are rarely easy to judge, particularly on TikTok, where viewers almost always see only one side of the story.
One thing most people can probably agree on, however, is that a little more patience and respect from everyone involved could have prevented the disagreement from escalating in the first place.
