Justin Verlander Of The Detroit Tigers Wins The 2011 AL MVP

Verlander was tops in the AL in the pitching triple crown categories with a 2.40 ERA, 24 wins, and 250 strikeouts. He was clearly the MVP of the Tigers all season long winning big games throughout. He joins Hall Of Famer Don Newcomb as someone that has won the Rookie of the Year Award, Cy Young Award and Most Valuable Player Award.

I can not say that I saw that one coming.  Current American League Cy Young award winner Justin Verlander wins the 2011 AL MVP.  He clearly had the numbers and the resume to warrant his winning the award, I’m just surprised the voters gave the nod to a pitcher.

Verlander received 13 of 28 1st-place votes for 280 points and was followed by Boston’s Jacoby Ellsbury (242), Toronto’s Jose Bautista (231), New York’s Curtis Granderson (215), and fellow Tiger Miguel Cabrera (193).
