Miami cops arrest woman accused of targeting man through Instagram before ambush robbery

That next DM in your inbox might just be a trap.

Miami is notorious for its party atmosphere, but this crime story is a reminder that you should be on your guard for people with ulterior motives. Enter Nicole Cano, 30, who allegedly used her Instagram account to lure men into a trap before robbing them.

A victim raised the alarm with the Miami-Dade Police Department after responding to Cano’s Instagram DM. After a short back-and-forth, she invited him over to her apartment at her affluent Paraiso Bayviews condo for drinks. According to court documents, Cano reached out to the victim at about noon, and by around 6:15 p.m, the victim had arrived at her place.

When the victim arrived at Cano’s apartment, they first went to the balcony to enjoy the view. Then, two more women joined them. Almost immediately, the three women allegedly started demanding money from him. The victim initially told the women that he had no money with him at the time, which allegedly led them to lock him inside the apartment while deliberating over whether to strip him of his $300 chain.

It’s a trap!

After the man managed to escape her condo and later identified her in a lineup, Cano rejected any claims that it was a robbery and only admitted to meeting her accuser at her condo. As the case is still ongoing, she is being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. According to reports, if she is found guilty, she could be facing up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Officer Michael Vega of the Miami-Dade Police Department released a statement saying, “We ask anybody who has information or who is also a victim of this female or of any other to please contact the City of Miami Police Department and give us that information.”

When Cano’s mugshot made its way online, people started fixating on her looks — but for some, the bigger concern was that she wasn’t even the first person arrested on similar charges this year. There was Sarah Tavano, 39, who was arrested in Miami for allegedly drugging multiple men and committing multiple counts of grand larceny.

One thing is certain: as everyone should know by now, social media is a common territory for criminal enterprises to hatch their shadowy schemes. It’s being used to scam, con, and now even lure unsuspecting people from around the world into dangerous situations. Stay vigilant. That next DM in your inbox might just be a trap.
