10 Possible Superhero Shows For DC’s New Digital Service

What a time to be a DC fan! Yesterday, news dropped that Warner Bros. Digital Network will launch a new DC digital service in 2018. While the contents of the service are mostly a mystery, details were revealed about two new series: Titans and Young Justice: Outsiders. Obviously, it's like Christmas in April, but everyone is still asking, what other superhero shows could be in the pipeline for this new service? It's highly probable that most of the older DC films and series will go on the platform initially, but its biggest drawing card will have to be original content. With a universe of infinite characters and storylines, there's no shortage of material for Geoff Johns and co. to utilize here. However, that doesn't mean you should get your hopes up for a Mongul travel show just yet. So, with the exciting news of this upcoming service still warming our souls, let's speculate about which 10 shows will find their way onto the platform. While it's pure guesswork at this point, there's definitely a part of us that hopes all of these get made. Suicide Squad Chris Pratt's recent comments about Suicide Squad may have annoyed a couple of diehard fans, but he did hit the nail on the head: there was an excess of characters that needed to be fleshed out better. While it's too late to do that now, the team does lend itself better to serialized stories, rather than the film format. Sorry, fam, but it's true. Think of the comic book series as an idea of how this show would work. There's an overarching storyline, but each story brings one or two of the members to the core and we get to know them and their backstories better. Do this over a season and we would know the members of Task Force X better than they know themselves. Undoubtedly, there will have to be a recast of the characters and a soft reboot, but Suicide Squad could be a major hit if done right. It certainly would make a statement and show that Warner's not playing with this new service, that's for sure. Watchmen There've been reports floating around that HBO might be considering a Watchmen series. What if we're getting the info wrong though and Watchmen is actually for DC's new platform? Now, that would be something special. While Zack Snyder's film received praise for its nearly faithful adaptation of the source material, there's still room to explore more of the folklore here. Whether it be via prequels, spinoffs, or a continuation of the original story, Watchmen has a lot of life left in its old bones. As Doctor Manhattan continues to play a pivotal role in Rebirth, we're likely to see more of this franchise in the near future. In which form, though? That's the big question, and unfortunately, we don't have any firm answers at this point. Birds Of Prey 2002's Birds of Prey started with a big bang and crashed down to Earth fast. It's sad, because the series had some good ideas (and a decent cast), but its execution left a lot to be desired. For one, it should've tried to follow the comic book series more closely rather than try to be its own thing. With Joss Whedon's Batgirl on the horizon, it shows that DC is fully committed to its heroines, so we can expect more female-driven projects. A new Birds of Prey TV series, therefore, remains a real and exciting possibility. After all, who wouldn't want to see Huntress, Black Canary, and Batgirl take down Gotham City's underworld every week? More selfishly, it's high time that Babs takes her personality back from that pretentious, non-ginger on Arrow, Felicity Smoak. We're over her trying to be an Oracle/Batgirl clone by now. Batman: The Animated Series No, not a reboot or repeat, but a continuation of the award-winning animated series. While it did sort of continue as The New Batman Adventures, it would be best if the revived show was set in the original continuity of the far-superior Batman: The Animated Series. With Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy still lending their voices to the Joker and Batman, respectively, it shouldn't be too hard to get the old gang back together for another season. Also, with the renewed popularity of lesser-known characters in the DCEU and comic books, it presents an excellent opportunity to inject fresh blood into the series. Due to the success of Batman on the big screen, it's unlikely that we'll see a live-action Dark Knight TV series in the near future. That said, not one single person will complain if we get another season of Batman: The Animated Series in its place. Celebrating 25 years since its release this year, Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski's fabled show lives on as one of the greatest animated TV series of all-time. If Young Justice can enjoy a revival, why can't this? Superboy The one thing that Rebirth's been consistent in doing is pushing Jon Kent (Superboy) harder than the WWE pushes Roman Reigns. At times, it feels like Clark and Lois's spawn is almost too ever-present in Action Comics and Superman. Nonetheless, there has to be a reason for this sudden spike in his character development and story arcs. Don't be surprised if we receive a Superboy series that follows a young Jon Kent as he comes to terms with his powers and becoming a teenager. While it'll probably be aimed at a younger audience than Smallville was, it does sound like something with a lot of potential. In recent times, superhero TV shows have been geared more towards young adults and adults, but there hasn't been a live-action show that's made for the younger fans. Somehow, I see Superboy filling this gap rather well. Don't you? Lobo For years there's been mutterings of a Lobo film. At one point, even Dwayne Johnson was attached to star in it. Sadly, nothing's come to fruition, and DC's missed the boat here. Even if it were made tomorrow, it would look like nothing more than a Deadpool ripoff. There's potential, though, in an animated Lobo series. Think of it as a darker version of Rick and Morty, but with the same sort of humor and intergalactic adventures. Not only would an animated effort sort out the budgetary issues of bringing this cosmic character's world to life, but it would allow for more creative freedom, too. The Main Man's due his moment in the sun now. He's waited patiently in the wings for far too long, so there must be some plan for him, right? Static This one's been in the making for a few years now - even having Jaden Smith's name tied to it at some stage - so it's looking more and more likely to happen. Back in 2014, Static was mooted as a Warner Bros. Blue Ribbon's project, which makes more sense that it would be released on DC's digital streaming service. If that doesn't excite you, the news that the power team of Geoff Johns, Reginald Hudlin and Denys Cowan are collaborating on the series might just do the trick. The news of Hudlin's involvement, in particular, should delight fans of his Black Panther run. Out of all the shows mentioned on this list, this is the one we'd bank the most on being announced sooner rather than later. Static is coming, people. The big question is, will Jaden Smith be Virgil Hawkins or not? As much as it pains us to say it, he'd actually make a decent Static. Shazam DC appears to be giving more thought to Black Adam than Billy Batson/Shazam. Maybe it's because they're planning a big showdown between Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam and Henry Cavill's Superman in the Man of Steel sequel? Only they know what their plans are, but they're keeping them locked under key right now. Last we heard, Alan Ritchson was supposed to play Shazam, and he'd definitely be the perfect candidate for the role. Judging by his comedic work on Blue Mountain State, Ritchson's Shazam would be a riot - and possibly funnier than Powerless, too (even though that's not too difficult to do). There's a real possibility of making an exceptional superhero comedy here, and we can't think of a better character than Shazam to pull it off. Ritchson appears to be done with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, so he should have some free time now. Give him a call, Geoff, before the mouse people do. Batman Beyond Much like Batman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond proved to be an outright success. The characters have become beloved and the storylines so popular that they've found their way into an ongoing titular comic book series. It's a franchise that continues to be popular 18 years later and shows no signs of letting up. Talks of a live-action adaptation have cooled over the years, though, so it would make sense to revisit the animated show again if the possibility presents itself. Considering all the developments in the comic book series recently, there's a lot of new material for the producers to draw inspiration from. Imagine this: a Batman power hour, featuring Batman: The Animated Series and Batman Beyond, on this new platform. We might as well go ahead and cancel all our social plans forever, because this would take over our lives. Swamp Thing Swamp Thing has always been a precarious character for DC. In the 80s and early 90s, the character received a TV show, two films, and an extremely short-lived animated series. Since then, his popularity has been on a slow decline, hovering on the periphery of DC's stories. However, in recent times, his stock has started to climb again and we could be entering a Swamp Thing renaissance of sorts. While a live-action series might prove to be a step too far for him at the moment, there's nothing stopping DC from making a darker, edgier animated series in the same vein as Justice League Dark. Alan Moore has already penned the best tales for this botanical hero, so it's only up to the creative team to adapt them for the digital screen. If DC's looking for a quick win for its new platform, it needs to look no further than a Swamp Thing series. It's sure to be a fan-approved endeavor and one of the most-watched superhero shows.
