Marvel has just announced that the latest addition to the third season of Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be veteran actor Powers Boothe, who has made a career out of playing unsavory characters in the likes of Sin City, Deadwood and Tombstone.

You may recognize Boothe as a member of the World Security Council in Avengers, but apparently he’ll be playing a different role here that was created just for the show. The character, named Gideon Malick, is described as “a notorious man whose loyalties remain a mystery.”

Despite that seeming to suggest that his motivations might be ambiguous, the additional quote from Marvel’s Head of Television, Jeph Loeb, definitely conjures an image of a pretty sinister persona:

“Gideon is incredibly menacing and in him we have a character that even the stone-cold Grant Ward would fear. Only someone of Powers’ caliber could deliver the type of ominous and powerful performance we needed.”

Unfortunately, no mention is made of when we can expect to see Mr. Malick make his presence known, but be sure to tune in to ABC next Tuesday for the latest episode of Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. to see if we get any hints about his impending arrival.
