As two of the biggest geek-friendly shows on British soil, Doctor Who and Sherlock are practically in a league of their own when it comes to fandom.
The latter is now on hiatus for the foreseeable future – season 5 is still on the cards, for what it’s worth, but Benedict Cumberbatch’s stacked schedule (see: Avengers: Infinity War) has pushed Sherlock‘s return further down the pipeline. Doctor Who, on the other hand, is gearing up for a historic transition, as Peter Capaldi prepares to hand over the keys to the TARDIS to Jodie Whittaker, the incoming Time Lord who will assume pole position this festive season.
And as Capaldi’s victory lap continues, series producer and director Rachel Talalay recently shared a candid pic of the Twelfth Doctor paying a visit to 221b Baker Street, thereby fueling the longstanding ‘WhoLock’ fan theory – essentially, a vocal pocket of fans believe the two shows inhabit the same universe, which is both inspired and preposterous.
Check it out in the gallery below, along with some cool fan-art imagining a potential crossover:
Pretty cool, no? Just don’t get too carried away by those ‘WhoLock’ allegations, as Talalay’s Tweet came bearing the caption: “Promised #LIWho I’d finally post this: #PCap visiting (no conspiracy) me at #Sherlock221b last year. In costume as he was working on Class that day. Now I’m done over-explaining, great moment for #WhoLock #DoctorWho.”
If nothing else, as the tributes continue to pour in for Peter Capaldi’s outgoing Doctor, this is a wonderful keepsake for the Scottish actor, who will no doubt be remembered as one of the best incarnations of the all-powerful Time Lord.
Doctor Who returns to our screens this festive season with “Twice Upon a Time,” which is shaping up to be a bittersweet Christmas Special in that it’ll signal the end of Capaldi’s tenure as the BBC’s Time Lord, while simultaneously launching a brand new chapter featuring Jodie Whittaker.
