After season 11 wrapped up earlier this month, Doctor Who will return on New Year’s Day for a fresh adventure featuring Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor and her time-traveling cohorts. As per the rest of the recently highly-secretive season, details on the hour-long special – titled “Resolution” – are being kept tightly under wraps. However, one of the show’s stars has now given us some hints at what we can expect from the festive episode.
Mandip Gill – who plays Yaz, one of the Time Lord’s latest batch of companions alongside Bradley Walsh (Graham) and Tosin Cole (Ryan) – told EW that “Resolution” will have a mix of a darker style with an action-packed explosive edge. She also promised that it would tie up “loose ends” leftover from season 11.
“It’s quite dark, and scary, and eerie. It’s an explosive one [but] it’s really fun and it ties up a lot of loose ends. It’s really exciting.”
The big theory surrounding the special is that the Doctor’s enemies the Daleks will finally return to the series after they, and all the other classic monsters, were kept out of the latest run in order to keep things fresh and easily accessible to new audiences. Naturally, the topic of the Daleks’ possible comeback came up when EW chatted to Gill, and the actress replied with a hard-to-interpret response, saying:
“Well, like you say, they’re just rumors, aren’t they? We’ve managed to get this far keeping everything a secret. Now, how would we let that slip?”
Gill might be in the know on the special, but beyond that she’s as in the dark as the fans. The fantastic foursome will all return for season 12, due in 2020, but the actress admitted to EW that the producers have yet to inform her of the plans for her second run on board the time machine.
“Absolutely not. They’re not telling me anything.”
Be sure to catch Doctor Who “Resolution” on BBC One/America on January 1st.
