In a unique twist on the classic version of the character, Gotham‘s Firefly is going to be a woman, and Michelle Veintimilla will be playing Bridgit Pike in two episodes of the Batman prequel. The official network description for this Firefly reveals that after being enslaved by her brothers, a notorious gang of arsonists, Bridgit Pike is forced into the family business. When she catches the eye of Selina Kyle, the young Cat Woman and the soon-to-be-Firefly team up to put Bridgit’s firestarting skills to good use.

However, after a deadly encounter with the Pike Brothers, the meek Cinderella is transformed into a vengeful supervillain, hellbent on destroying those who have wronged her.

That actually sounds pretty awesome, and while Gotham has so far been a little hit and miss when it comes to the depiction of Batman’s future foes, this has all the makings of an interesting origin story for the character. There are plenty of other intriguing scenes in this promo, too, particularly Galavan talking to a mysterious hooded figure about the young Bruce Wayne.

Season one of Gotham started off slow and improved in the second half, and this season has so far managed to keep up the momentum. Will Firefly be an asset to the show once she makes her appearance? We’ll have to wait and see, but so far, I’m definitely excited.
