8 Awesome Easter Eggs In Jessica Jones Season 1

By now, you'll have no doubt binge watched the entirety of Jessica Jones, the latest series from Marvel and Netflix. Quite frankly, it's one of the best things that Marvel has done and in our glowing review of it, our very own Isaac Feldberg concluded the following: Darker and more dangerous than anything else Marvel Studios has put out to date, Jessica Jones is also very possibly its finest, most fully-formed creation. The show is, of course, packed full of some absolutely brilliant moments (you can see our countdown of the very best by clicking here), but what about Easter Eggs? Daredevil had tons of them, with nods to everyone from Elektra to Stilt Man and Gladiator, but how does Jessica Jones compare? Well, there are certainly a lot less of them, but those which are included are no doubt extremely significant. Whether it's certain costumes or catchphrases, or even references to characters no one ever expected to see show up in Jessica Jones, the critically acclaimed series clearly made an effort to make fans happy by paying homage to the character's relatively short stint as part of the Marvel Comics Universe. So, with that in mind, here you'll find the eight awesome Easter Eggs from season one of Jessica Jones. Needless to say, spoilers follow... 8) Jewel's Costume Unlike the comic books, the small screen version of Jessica Jones never actually gets chance to suit up and play hero. Instead, she's taken by Kilgrave around the time she's actually considering using her powers to help others. Before that, though, comes a very cool scene which features an appearance from a costume that fans should have instantly recognized. While suggesting code names (Jessica instantly dismisses "Jewel" due to it sounding like something a stripper would use), Trish shows her best friend a costume that's identical to the one worn by her comic book counterpart when she became Jewel. Jessica rejects that too, and while it would have been fun to see her actually suit up in the flashbacks, you have to hand it to the series for at least acknowledging the source material in this tongue in cheek way. Maybe she'll wear it in season two? 7) "Sweet Christmas!" It may sound like a bit of a silly catchphrase, but Luke Cage has become known for saying "Sweet Christmas!" over the years, and whether or not we'd hear it in season one of Jessica Jones was a big talking point before the show hit Netflix. As it turns out though, he says it twice. The first comes after a particularly passionate encounter with Jessica early on, while the second follows shortly after when the two heroes come across a staggering amount of marijuana. A fun nod to his comic book counterpart, it should now be interesting to see whether or not Mike Colter ends up saying it again in his own solo series (which is set to hit the online streaming service next year). If we had to bet, he'll probably drop it at least a couple of times. Either way though, kudos to Jessica Jones for finding a way to use it on two occasions without it comes across as silly or forced though; this definitely a fan pleasing Easter Egg, that's for sure. 6) Angela Del Toro In the comic books, Angela Del Toro was one of the FBI agents investigating Daredevil when his secret identity was outed to the world. After inheriting some mystical amulets though, she actually turned to the Man Without Fear for his assistance, ultimately deciding to become a costumed crime fighter known as White Tiger. Jessica Jones, however, made it clear that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is taking Angela in a slightly different direction, when Jessica mentions that she's a fellow private eye. It's worth noting that this character has not been cast for Daredevil season two or Luke Cage, but it's still entirely possible that she'll factor into Iron Fist, particularly as her powers are connected to the mystical realm of K'un-L'un. Regardless of where and when she shows up though, this was a neat way to reveal her existence. 5) Nuke One of the most surprising plot threads in Jessica Jones is how things play out with Sergeant Simpson. While Wil Traval may be playing Will Simpson instead of Frank Simpson, he's clearly a new version of Nuke, a Daredevil and Captain America villain who also popped pills to become a super soldier, losing control of his faculties in the process. While there's nothing to say that Will is THE Nuke, he's quite clearly part of the same program, and their link to Jessica is obviously going to be further explored in season two as Trish starts looking into how her friend is connected to them. It's also worth noting that the American flag lighter he uses at one point appears to be a clear nod to the tattoo which covers Nuke's face in the comics, so who knows? It's certainly possible that Will is going to undergo a transformation come season two. 4) Nods To Hellcat Other than getting the chance to kick some ass later in the series, Jessica Jones doesn't exactly set up Trish Walker's transformation into Hellcat. However, it does reference it in a number of ways. For example, her red wig when she's "Patsy Walker" in that cheesy sounding TV show is a clear nod to her comic book counterpart's appearance, while that series in general appears to be a nod to the character's very early 1940s set adventures when she starred in romantic stories and the like (it wasn't until decades later that she was reimagined and rebooted as Hellcat). As Trish's powers are rooted in mysticism, it's certainly possible that she'll get them somewhere down the line as Daredevil and Iron Fist further explore those themes. For the time being, though, it definitely appears as if her role in Jessica Jones will be much different than that. 3) That Poor Door Jessica Jones' time in the Marvel Comics Universe pales in comparison to the decades worth of history that many other heroes have, hence why it's not all that surprising that her TV series isn't packed full of references to Alias. Despite that, it does at least pay homage to her first issue in a major way, with the premiere opening with her throwing a man through the door of Alias Investigations just as her comic book counterpart did some years back. It's no bad thing that Jessica Jones veered from the source material in a lot of ways, but including something like this is a respectful and fun way to acknowledge her comic book roots. It's also worth noting that the sex scene between Jessica and Luke Cage also strongly resembles the way that scene played out in the pages of Alias, so that first episode does take at least a few cues from the source material. 2) Another Hero In Hell's Kitchen Unfortunately, Daredevil doesn't make a cameo appearance in season one of Jessica Jones (how great would it have been for Matt Murdock to be the one defending her at the end of the finale?), but Rosario Dawson's Claire Temple does. That in itself is a very cool Easter Egg, but it's what she says about the Man Without Fear which is the most noteworthy thing here. Claire makes numerous references to her dealing with Daredevil, vaguely referring to the fact that she treated him and was ultimately kicked out of her apartment after the chaos which took place there when armed thugs came looking for the vigilante. This also seemingly confirms that Jessica Jones is set following the events of Daredevil, though it's surprising that there isn't so much as a single mention of Wilson Fisk's arrest. 1) The Purple Man While he may have been portrayed as having a penchant for wearing purple clothing, David Tennant's Kilgrave is never once referred to as Purple Man in Jessica Jones. That's understandable (they also dropped the "Zebediah" part of his name), but you have to hand it to the series for finding a way to incorporate his comic book counterpart's purple skin in the finale. When Kilgrave's father injects him with a concoction of drugs to make his powers even great, purple veins can be seen spreading up from his neck, and it seemed for a second as if the show would end with him actually being purple. Obviously, that wasn't the case, but when the villain really intensely barks an order at Jessica, his face does go purple for a split second, a side effect of that injection no doubt. As brief as it may have been, this was definitely a fitting way to handle it.
