So far, Marvel and Netflix have been happy bedfellows and none of their five solo series produced together have had any trouble getting renewed. The only one to end after just one season was The Defenders miniseries, which was more of a one-and-done thing anyway. The streaming service even had enough faith in Iron Fist‘s initial run to commission Marvel to make another outing.
At the time of writing, however, Netflix has yet to announce that Luke Cage is getting a third season. Speaking at Sunday’s Television Critics Association press tour, the site’s Vice President of Original Content, Cindy Holland revealed that “we haven’t made any firm decisions yet” about whether the Hero of Harlem will be back for another standalone outing.
Before fans get too crushed, this doesn’t mean that there’s no hope for a season 3, it’s just that Netflix hasn’t got around to deciding yet. In fact, Deadline reports that the writers room for Luke Cage is already developing plans for a new run, so it might just be a matter of time before the show officially gets renewed.
Even more so than usual, fans will be desperate for a renewal here, as Luke Cage season 2 ended on a major cliffhanger. After a power vacuum appeared in Harlem, Luke made the bold decision to step in and become the town’s new crime boss, hoping to change the corrupt city for the better from within. The Godfather-inspired final scene suggests it’s more likely that he’ll be the one to change, though.
Of course, if the worst does happen and Luke Cage is cancelled, there’s another show where Mike Colter’s bulletproof vigilante could find a home. Everyone wants to see Luke and Danny Rand form the Heroes for Hire, so perhaps Iron Fist could be retooled into a team-up series? We’ll just have to wait and see, but in the meantime, you can look forward to season 2 of the Marvel martial arts series hitting Netflix on September 7th.
