‘Powerpuff Girls’ live-action reboot gets axed at The CW

'Powerpuff' seemingly can't escape development hell.

Back in 2020, it was announced that CW has plans to create a live-action TV adaptation of the popular Cartoon Network show, The Powerpuff Girls. But after two years of development, it was announced that the show will no longer make it onto screens.

CW’s Powerpuff was being developed by the same producers of the Arrowverse and has previously announced the main cast for the show. However, TVLine reported that the pilot episode that starred Chloe Bennet, Dove Cameron, and Yana Perrault wasn’t picked up to become a series after filming ended back in 2021.

CW’s President of Entertainment, Brad Schwartz told TVLine that it has given the live-action Powerpuff Girls adaptation back to the studios to sell, along with other shows that were being developed, like Justice U and a female-led Zorro series.

“We’ve already given those back to the studios. So they’re free to develop those and sell them anywhere.”

Prior to the show being shut down, Powerpuff dealt with some issues during its development. Back in Feb. 2022, it was reported that Bennet stepped down from her role as Blossom in the CW show. At the same time, there were plans to connect this TV show to the Arrowverse, which is really weird because The Powerpuff Girls isn’t part of DC. It was also reported by Deadline that the show would face rewrites after a script was leaked on social media.

According to the show’s plot on IMDb, CW’s Powerpuff will be about the iconic trio in their 20s, who now resent themselves after losing their childhood for the life of becoming superheroes. Now, they’re faced with a choice if they want to reunite or live normal lives despite the world needing them more than ever. Unfortunately, not everyone was keen on the live-action reboot after the script leaked, since it poked fun at the original ’90s cartoon, as well as exaggerated the personalities of these characters.

There aren’t any plans as of yet to bring the show to our screens through a different broadcaster.
