If you grew up in the ’80s, chances are you sat gazing in wonder at the TV at some point while Jim Henson and Frank Oz’s The Dark Crystal worked its magic. The groundbreaking 1982 fantasy adventure is still regarded as a classic to this day, and it’s now been announced that a prequel series is on the way.
Netflix has revealed that a 10-episode show, titled The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is due to begin shooting in the UK sometime this fall, and will be set many years before the events of the original film. That story involved two elf-like creatures known as Gelflings and their quest to stop a race of malevolent beings known as the Skeksis from gaining immortality, and thus dooming the planet of Thra to everlasting darkness.
A synopsis for the prequel has been released as well and from what we can tell, it really doesn’t sound like it’s going to be all that different from the film…an extra Gelfling in the mix aside.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” returns to the world of Thra with an all new adventure: When three Gelfling discover the secret behind the Skeksis’ power, they embark on a journey to ignite the fires of rebellion and save the entire world.
