There aren’t many shows that can take unprecedented levels of debauchery and transform it into some of the best television around right now, but the creative team behind The Boys, with superhuman levels of gumption in tow, have done it again and again for three seasons now, upping the ante with calculated reckless abandon each time.
Indeed, the third round of shenanigans for everyone’s favorite team of superhero killers climaxed like never before in the season’s sixth episode, “Herogasm”; if the name alone doesn’t telegraph exactly what viewers were in for with this, that’s because the English language is simply unequipped to capture the ludicrous state of affairs that permeated the runtime of “Herogasm.”
Of course, going from a superhuman orgy straight into a full-frontal superhuman bloodbath sounds like a quasi-comprehensible transition on paper, but bringing it to life on the show was nothing short of a herculean team effort. In an interview with Variety, The Boys production designer Jeff Mossa didn’t hold back in divulging just how difficult it was to film the most provocative episode in an infinitely provocative show; from the set-up to the tear-down and everything in between.
There are so many logistical things that can go wrong all the time. We’re all just in it to help each other. We shot all of the scenes with that set first, then we spent a day or two, making it look like a giant fight had occurred in there. The visual effects team had come in and they scanned the whole thing so that during the fight itself, they were able to essentially deal with some of the damage that we did.
It’s no surprise that The Boys, a show that’s known for running out of fake blood behind the scenes, had the ambition necessary to pull off such a mind-bogglingly disgusting work of art in “Herogasm,” and to also have the means and the know-how to craft such scenes is a testament to the level that this creative team is operating on; we can’t wait to see what season four has in store for us.
The Boys is available to stream on Prime Video.
