Snowpiercer, Bong Joon-ho’s striking and thrilling sci-fi story of the haves and the have nots, hit theaters back in 2013 but unfortunately, it didn’t exactly set the box office on fire. It’s a testimony to the film’s quality, though, that its VOD haul was almost twice the amount of what it did in cinemas. Throw in a cult following that’s formed in the years since and it makes sense as to why TNT has decided to push forward with a television adaptation.
For those unfamiliar with the property, it imagines an apocalyptic scenario where remnants of humanity live on a speeding bullet train as it circles a frozen, desolate Earth over and over again. By putting the poorest citizens in the rear of the train, the law enforcers on board ensured that the social elite lived comfortably at the front, blissfully unaware of what was going on just a few hundred meters behind them.
The story of a brutal caste system with an apocalyptic twist, there was clearly enough potential there to warrant exploring this world further and now we’ll get to do just that with the aforementioned TV show. And judging by the very first trailer, which can be seen up above, it looks like we’re in for quite a treat.
Indeed, the footage we see here is sterile and chilly, giving us a brief overview of the premise and teasing a tense revolution that’s brewing within the train. All things considered, it’s an intriguing look at what’s sure to be a thrilling ride and we can’t wait for it to premiere.
As one of the hottest tickets on TNT’s slate (no pun intended), we imagine we’ll be seeing a lot more of this hugely anticipated show in the months to come and with any luck, Snowpiercer will live up to its namesake and be on par with the movie that inspired it.
