One of the joys of each new season of The Flash is finding out which character Tom Cavanagh will be playing this time around. While speaking with EW at San Diego Comic-Con, Cavanagh opened up a little on what we can expect from Wells 5.0 in the upcoming season. Hidden in a lot of jokes, the star offers some intriguing hints as to the personality of his new character, describing him as having “humor,” “intensity” and more.

“I’m just doing my darnedest to get this show cancelled, one guy after one guy after one guy and somehow I haven’t quite struck that note yet, but maybe this year. This guy will be filled with intrigue and deceit, fun, humor, intensity, and [be] very loud. I don’t know about the last bit, but it’s going to be really a prime-time viewing. I think… It’s good, it’s going to be really fun. You’ll have to watch and see.”

To date, the main Wellses we’ve met include Reverse-Flash in Earth-1 Wells’ body, Earth-2’s “Harry” Wells (for both seasons 2 and 4) and Earth-19’s H.R. Wells. While the first was a villain, the second was a good guy and H.R. mostly served as the comic relief, going by Cavanagh’s description, it seems this latest Wells could blur the lines of what role he’ll play within Team Flash, as the actor teased that there’ll be “deceit.”

Tom Cavanagh will also play another role in The Flash season 5 – behind the scenes, that is, as he’s been entrusted with directing the 100th ever episode of the show, which will also serve as the midseason finale. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, though, as we still have the season premiere to look forward to on October 9th.
