Norman Reedus, Danai Gurira and Melissa McBride feature in the poster as Daryl Dixon, Michonne and Carol Peletier, respectively. Since Andrew Lincoln’s Rick and Lauren Cohan’s Maggie were both written out in season 9, these three are the elder statesman of the show nowadays. Though we’re losing one of them sometime in the coming year, as Gurira has confirmed that she’s leaving TWD soon, with season 10 being her last year on the series.

The key art’s accompanied by the official synopsis for the new run, which did come our way back at Comic-Con last month, but here it is again. The description recaps the events of the show’s past and hints at the dark days to come. Not just because of the Whisperers, but also due to the communities’ own problems.

The Walking Dead is a story that started 10 years ago with one man trying to find his family. That family grew and gradually communities took shape. They fought and survived, thrived and gave birth to a new generation. It is a tale of humankind and there are more stories to tell. It is now Spring, a few months after the end of Season 9, when our group of survivors dared to cross into Whisperer territory during the harsh winter. The collected communities are still dealing with the after effects of Alpha’s horrific display of power, reluctantly respecting the new borderlines being imposed on them, all while organizing themselves into a militia-style fighting force, preparing for a battle that may be unavoidable.

“But the Whisperers are a threat unlike any they have ever faced. Backed by a massive horde of the dead it is seemingly a fight they cannot win. The question of what to do and the fear it breeds will infect the communities and give rise to paranoia, propaganda, secret agendas, and infighting that will test them as individuals and as a society. The very idea of whether civilization can survive in a world filled with the dead hangs in the balance.”

TWD may be about to enter its tenth year, but it shows no signs of slowing down in its mature age. In fact, AMC has maintained that the franchise is still in the early stages of its lifespan. 2020 will be a big year for the brand, too, as we’ve got a second youth-oriented spinoff show coming as well as the first of possibly several movies for Rick Grimes on the big screen.

The Walking Dead season 10 is now just over five weeks away from hitting AMC on October 6th, and we can hardly wait.
