Variety reported that the announcement on Twitter was met with issues to the point where it was delayed for nearly half an hour beyond its 6:00 PM ET start. DeSantis was joined by Twitter’s owner, Elon Musk on Twitter Spaces to announce his candidacy, along with 600,000 listeners, and claimed it would lead to a “great American comeback.”

“Well, I’m running for president to lead our great American comeback. We know our country is going in the wrong direction… American decline is not inevitable; it is a choice.”

Musk commented on the delay and stated that it may be a server issue. Later, Republican Donor and Musk’s friend, David Sacks jokingly told DeSantis that he “broke the internet.” A video of DeSantis’s campaign announcement was also released on Twitter, where he used his work in Florida as a prime example of how he could be America’s next great leader.

DeSantis made himself known in America and on the world stage for his “war on woke” and his ongoing battle against Disney. He’s also seen as former president Donald Trump‘s biggest rival in the upcoming election. DeSantis passed laws that targeted the LGBT+ community, such as the infamous “Don’t Say Gay” bill and other laws that made it unsafe for trans and gay people to live in the state.

Asides from DeSantis, Trump announced his candidacy last year at his Mar-a-Lago residency. However, it’s currently unknown if he’s going to be a Republican or an independent candidate. Kanye West also hinted that he too would be running for the next election, but we’ll see if that pans out. As for the democrats, Joe Biden announced that he plans to run for his second term in the White House.
