The legendary Kong has returned to our screens, this time in animated form as the king of his own island kingdom. The long-awaited animated project Skull Island, which was first announced two years ago, made its Netflix debut on June 22 to a lot of fanfare. The series centers on a group of shipwrecked characters who are struggling to survive on Skull Island — the home to the legendary Kong and his enormous beastly co-habitants.
The celebrated pop culture icon King Kong is no stranger to animation and has been around wreaking havoc for over 90 years. But the excitement around his new on-screen presence is unaffected by the numerous portrayals of the legendary character. Skull Island focuses more on the benevolent explorers rather than the mighty monsters. However, when Kong finally dives headfirst into the chaos, the series devotes enough time to unraveling the emotional mysteries of Titan.
To set things straight, Skull Island unquestionably ushers in a brand-new, spectacular MonsterVerse chapter for Legendary Entertainment. With Netflix’s Skull Island, fans have just received their first MonsterVerse television series and the fifth overall installment in the MonsterVerse. The joint venture production between Legendary Television, Tractor Pants Productions, Powerhouse Animation Studios, and Netflix Animation was written by Brian Duffield.
The MonsterVerse officially started with the 2014 film Godzilla and has been led by the two celebrated kaiju Godzilla and King Kong. The last film in the franchise came in 2021 with Godzilla vs. Kong, which became the most successful title in HBO Max’s history until it was overtaken by Mortal Kombat. The MonsterVerse series will be continued with a sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong, titled Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, scheduled to be released on March 15, 2024.
