The United States of America is the greatest country on Earth, a beacon of liberty that the rest of the planet regards with envy, wishing they were lucky enough to live there and enjoy freedom. USA! USA! USA! Or, at least, that’s what they want you to think.
The reality is somewhat different. With the Trump administration eyeing up invading Greenland and forcibly Americanizing the Greenlanders who live there, many have been surprised by how adamantly they do not want to become American citizens, citing the much lower standard of living, nightmarish healthcare, and corruption.
Now, as a snapshot of how the world is feeling right now, social media is currently reacting to a video of Brits being asked if they’d consider moving stateside. It’s safe to say the answer is… no.

MEANWHILE, WHY ARE SO MANY AMERICANS MOVING TO THE UK? pic.twitter.com/RYucCUZSlV
The general response is confusion they’d ever even consider it. Responses include a quick “No, never”, to dismissing the United States as “a complete hole”, and “it’s a disgusting place … it’s an absolute dump”.
“You don’t have free speech at all there”
What’s particularly eye-opening is the general feeling from Brits that they’d be giving up freedoms if they moved to the U.S. One woman says: “You step over there and you already lose like ten of the rights you have here.” Another says, “You don’t have free speech at all there”, with a man concluding “It’s definitely stricter over there” regarding what you’re allowed to say.
Admittedly, this is just one video of people randomly being asked in the street, and we don’t know whether they simply omitted to show the legions of Brits eager to emigrate. But somehow we doubt it.
Interesting to watch it. The healthcare costs are the clincher for me. The average Joe here could not afford American costs. Wages are not high enough

There once was a time when the United States really was the envy of the world, a beacon of freedom with a Constitution explicitly protecting its citizens from tyranny. But that was then and this is now, and these days the Constitution isn’t worth the parchment it was written on.
All of which serves as a reminder that the vast majority of the world sees the United States as just as repressive, authoritarian and corrupt as Russia and China. Maybe one day the U.S. will once again be able to hold its head up high, but somehow after all this I doubt it.
