A Chicago street performer’s calm response to a teenage thief and a mother’s decision to hold her son accountable are drawing widespread praise online after footage of the incident went viral this week.
The performer, Andrew David, was singing on a busy downtown Chicago corner when a teenager allegedly grabbed his tip box and ran away in the middle of a performance. David later shared video of the encounter on social media, racking up millions of views.
David is a longtime Chicago busker who has spent roughly a decade performing on city streets.
What happened to Andrew David’s tip box?
Video captured by David’s iPad shows a masked individual in a gray sweatshirt waiting for the right moment to grab the tips and flee as David performed “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran outside the One North State building in Chicago’s business district.
While the thief made off with roughly $100 in tips, David said that the loss of the physical container bothered him more than the missing cash. David notes in the video that he’s “too old” to chase after him.
David mentioned he noticed the teen and a group of friends walking by and making comments before the theft happened, but he didn’t think much of it at the time. And rather than chasing the teenager, David stayed composed. He later told local media he asked for the box to be returned. A passerby returned the container shortly after the incident.
But the story took another turn after the video spread online. Staff at Innovations High School identified the student after the clip gained traction and reached out to the performer to make amends. The school’s principal reportedly met with him the following day. The Innovations High School principal gave David a full tour to help him understand the environment and resources available to the students there.
But much of the internet’s attention is focused on how the boy’s mother handled the situation.
Mom paid everything back plus some
David said the boy’s mother personally reached out to apologize and made clear that the behavior was unacceptable. Social media users praised the parent for addressing the situation directly rather than dismissing or defending her son’s actions. She repaid the money David lost with some extra money included.
Online reactions framed the moment as an example of accountability and compassion intersecting. Many commenters applauded David for declining to escalate the situation and praised the mother for stepping in.
David has said he does not plan to pursue criminal charges against the teen. Instead, he expressed hope that the incident could serve as a learning experience. David noted that those who had already donated money that day were likely frustrated. Even still, David said he’s satisfied with how it worked out, adding, “Life is funny that way.”
He added, “I just hope that all this attention and, like, social media, like, can just make it a learning experience for him,” CBS News reported. For David, what began as a frustrating moment during a street performance has evolved into a conversation about parenting, accountability, and second chances.
