President Donald Trump is reportedly brushing off the possible breakdown of peace talks with Iran, saying he doesn’t “care if they’re over, honestly”. He apparently suggested the discussions had grown dull and that the Iranians were simply dragging things out.
During a phone interview, the President told CNBC that he couldn’t care less if the talks are officially finished. The news apparently caused a quick reaction in the markets, with oil prices jumping after reports that Iran might stop talks and try to block the Strait of Hormuz, states CNBC.
The report states that Trump was not bothered by the economic worry. He reportedly argued that the U.S. has plenty of its own oil and actually produces more than Russia and Saudi Arabia combined. While he agreed the U.S. does not depend on that particular shipping route, he highlighted that Europe relies on it more.
Trump dismisses NATO support and points to U.S. oil supply
When asked whether NATO might step in to help keep the strait open, the President was reportedly dismissive. As reported, his response was to call the alliance weak, claiming they offered to help only after the conflict ends, and stressing he is not looking for their help: “We don’t need them. We don’t need NATO.”
The report points out that a big part of Trump’s position is his focus on stopping Iran from getting a nuclear weapon. CNBC says that in his answer he laid out his belief that Americans are willing to put up with higher gas prices if it means preventing that.
The report claims he is confident prices at the pump will fall quickly once the situation is settled, pointing back to times when gas was as low as $1.85 a gallon. The hard line comes as some have apparently noted the recent strain on the economy tied to the talks falling apart.
On the conflict in Lebanon, the President reportedly said he planned to ask Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for an update. On Monday afternoon, the President wrote on Truth Social that he had a productive call with Netanyahu. He said there would be no troops sent to Beirut and that any units already on their way had been turned back. He also claimed he had been in contact with Hezbollah through representatives and that they had agreed to stop shooting.
Netanyahu later addressed the matter on X, saying that he told the President that if Hezbollah keeps attacking Israeli cities and citizens, Israel will strike terror targets in Beirut. He stressed that the Israeli position has not changed and that the military will continue its planned operations in southern Lebanon. The back-and-forth apparently follows claims about how a deal was reportedly reversed after a call between the two leaders.
Trump suggested the Iranians were just stalling for time and that he is perfectly fine if the current talks fall apart completely. He remains focused on his main goal of making sure Iran does not develop a nuclear weapon, telling CNBC, “If they want to try and have a new nuclear weapon, I will blow them up to kingdom come.”
