A man in California recorded a tense exchange at a grocery store after he heard a customer being rude to an employee who was checking out her items and shared it on a TikTok video. The customer appeared to be upset that the worker was moving too slowly for her liking. What followed was a back-and-forth that ended in an unexpected way.
The video was filmed by a shopper identified as Moo, who was at the Sprouts Farmers Market grocery store in Los Angeles. As he was placing his items on the belt at checkout, he began recording a conversation between a cashier and the customer. The on-screen text on the clip read, “Type of sh*t that happens when I’m next in line to check out 😭”.
In the recording, the customer can be heard telling the worker that she is doing “too much f—-g talking.” She also appeared to accuse the employee of moving too slowly, and several people could be seen in the background watching the scene unfold.
The exchange escalated as the customer’s cards declined at checkout
In the video, the cashier began to respond, but the customer interrupted her. The customer is heard saying, “Yo, I asked you a question, b—h, and you should have answered it.” Recordings like this echo other reported incidents, including a customer berating a special needs employee at a Pennsylvania store.
Moo went to return his basket to the basket station while the two could be heard arguing in the background. When he returned, the cashier was heard loudly telling the customer that her card had declined. The customer responded, “That’s okay. I have plenty of them,” to which the cashier replied, “Good for you.”
That was not the end of the exchange. The customer tried to use the tap feature for a second card but got no results. She said, “It’s not working.” The cashier tried to help, but the customer told the worker to “shut up” and called her “ugly.” When the customer finally got a card to go through, the cashier yelled out, “Declined!” for everyone to hear. The customer then appeared to use a third card, but it’s not clear whether it worked or not because that’s where the video ended.
In the comments, one viewer asked, “so did the payment ever go through?” The creator, Moo, replied, “She got her phone after and it looked like she had to transfer funds or something for it to go through.” The video sparked reactions from viewers responding to the scene.
One commenter wrote, “When I worked in retail and had to smile and be friendly at customers even when they were rude and yelling in my face… the ONLY thing that made that moment better was seeing that beautiful ‘DECLINED’ pop up on my screen 😭🤣.”
Some viewers weighed in on how the situation could have been handled. One commenter stated, “I’m sorry, but I would have called my manager and asked the manager finish the transaction. People act this way, because it’s allowed. I worked customer service for 22 years and I would refuse service if someone talked to me like that.” Filmed confrontations like this can carry consequences, as seen when a man’s employer reviewed his recorded actions after a Mississippi incident.
