Most workplace mix-ups involve little more than covering a coworker’s shift. For one restaurant worker, however, stepping in for a colleague unexpectedly led to a confrontation with the restaurant’s night cook, who allegedly pulled a knife on him over money he didn’t even know he was carrying.
According to TikTok creator Buddy Love, his friend, a newly hired server, was asked to cover the restaurant’s busiest section after its top server, “Larry,” was hospitalized just before a planned vacation. By the end of the night, he had walked away with roughly $500 in tips. Pulling in hundreds of dollars in tips isn’t always as straightforward as it looks, but according to the creator, this payout came with consequences the substitute server never saw coming.
As the creator recalled, the night cook came “busting out the back door yelling my friend’s name, and he’s screaming out like ‘hey you don’t leave before you give me my motherfucking money.'” The cook then “reached into his pocket and pulled out a knife.” But those generous tips weren’t actually for the service. “Larry wasn’t just a great server,” the creator claims, alleging that Larry and the cook were running a drug operation out of the kitchen.
Larry’s secret recipe was definitely not on the regular menu
The substitute server had no idea about the illegal scheme when he agreed to take over the section. Larry had built a reputation as the restaurant’s star server: “he knew he was good and he liked to brag,” constantly showing new hires how to rake in huge tips. After Larry was hospitalized following a car accident, the management passed his prime section over to the new guy.
“All these to-go orders Larry was putting in was a code for the cook to put those substances in these to-go boxes with the food so my friend or Larry would deliver them to the table and the big tips they were leaving was actually purchasing the substances that Larry and the cook were selling.”
Because Larry was hospitalized “before he could tell his master plan to my friend that he trusted,” the entire operation unraveled in a matter of hours. The night cook assumed the substitute server was in on the plan, yelling, “You’re the one that took care of Larry’s tables tonight, right?” Facing an aggressive confrontation in the parking lot, the terrified server “just gave the cook all of his money” to diffuse the situation.
Stories about crazy server encounters usually involve demanding customers or bad tips, but this one allegedly uncovered something far more serious. The substitute server walked away unharmed, but according to the creator, the misunderstanding “just blew the whole cover off the operation.”
