A TikTok creator took to the app to tell a very personal story about the disintegration of her family after her dad left her mom. The video quickly went viral, and viewers on the platform were denied the opportunity to comment on what can now be seen as a modern cautionary tale about how the dissolution of a marriage can become fodder for 1.7 million people to ponder.
The creator, under the username @danielle.habel, told the story using the “put a finger down” trend. She explained that her parents had been married for 30 years and had been planning to build and move into their dream home at some point in the future.
The house was going to be in the countryside, complete with farm animals. It was supposed to be the “crown jewel” of her family’s long life together. After years of hard work and dedication, Danielle’s father was finally able to deliver what he had promised his wife.
She thought they were life partners
At this point, Danielle starts running out of breath, but that’s because this is when the other shoe dropped. She even pauses and says, “My hands are shaking.” At first, things were as perfect as they could be. Danielle says her family moved into the beautiful, large estate, but before they could get comfortable, her dad got another job offer in another town.
He managed to convince her mother to move with him while they kept the property. The idea was that they would go back and forth, visit the farmhouse during the holidays and stay in the new city while he worked. Danielle says her mother agreed. They were life partners after all—or so she thought.
Soon, her father was having an affair with a colleague at the office. Then, seemingly unexpectedly for the family, her father decided that he wanted a separation so that he could be with the colleague.
The emotional fallout then turned into severe financial warfare. Danielle says that despite her father having the financial means, he decided to cut off her mother and refused to pay the mortgage on their newly acquired farmhouse. He also refused to pay child support for her younger siblings.
Danielle said the fallout created an immediate crisis for her family. Just over a year after they got their dream home, her mom and siblings were facing eviction. With no other viable options, her mom and siblings packed up and moved in with Danielle at her small, now cramped apartment.
But what truly added salt to the still-fresh wounds was that her father had now married the woman he had an affair with. They went on to buy another farmhouse and are now making content about their happy home—without mentioning all the skeletons in their closet.
They no longer have a relationship
The TikTok has since gone viral, but because the comments are locked, it’s impossible to tell what people think or what they would want to say. Trending videos on TikTok are known to sometimes blow the lid off family secrets, but this was truly unique.
Danielle made a follow up video saying that she no longer has a relationship with her father.
