Overkill Software’s cooperative heist sequel Payday 2 has debuted at number one in the UK gaming chart, dethroning Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition in the process. The follow-up to the studio’s first game – itself a 2011 download-only title – provided 505 games with its first No.1 release in over a year. You can check out the full list for the week ending Friday, August 17th down below.

1. Payday 2
2. Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition
3. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
4. FIFA 13
5. Animal Crossing: New Leaf
6. The Last of Us
7. The Smurfs 2
8. Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes
9. Tomb Raider
10. Grand Theft Auto 4

After a three week stint at the top spot, Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition has been pushed down to second to accommodate the release of Overkill’s Payday 2. This up-and-coming success can largely be attributed to the game’s lowly price tag; having retailed at $39.99/£25 when it was released on August 16th. Nevertheless, the game was still able to turn a profit even before its general release – having released on Steam three days earlier.

In the wake of their respective franchise showings last week, Grand Theft Auto IV and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 witnessed notable resurgences in the chart – with the latter climbing from 7th place in the space of a week. Rounding off the list was FIFA 13, Animal Crossing: New Leaf and The Last of Us, which maintained their steadfast hold on the chart’s central point.

Given that Payday 2 represents the only new entry on this week’s list, the calm before the forthcoming storm continues. In the immediate future, though, we have Saints Row IV and Splinter Cell: Blacklist releasing this coming week, and it seems certain that Sam Fisher and Steelport’s motley crew will have an influence on next week’s standings.

Tell us, did you pick up any of these releases this week? Or are you biding your time until Grand Theft Auto V? Let us know in the comments.
