Around this time last year, AMC began work on its adaptation of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s nineties comic book Preacher, with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg tasked with ushering it to the small screen. Whether it’s in light of their dwindling line-up – Breaking Bad has come and gone, and Mad Men is set to wrap soon – or something else entirely, the network are rumored to be kicking things up a notch.
A speculative spot of casting news has recently commenced its jaunt around the web – and it’s one we recommend ingesting with a smidgen of salt. According to a source over at The Tracking Board, Agent Carter star Dominic Cooper is the frontrunner for the lead role of supernatural reverend Jessie Custer.
Cooper has plenty of experience in the dominion of comic book adaptations, which might explain the choice. He appeared in Captain America: The First Avenger as Howard Stark, and reprised his role on the Carter TV series. That being said, we’ll treat this as speculation for now until verified by the powers that be.
As stated above, Rogen and Goldberg are bringing the comic to life for AMC, after working on it for some seven years. The latter offered an update on its progress in September, which revealed that the pair had begun work on the pilot script along with Ennis. We may be a ways off from seeing Preacher on the small screen, but it appears that it’ll be worth the wait.
PREACHER follows Jesse Custer, a reverend who has learned that God has left Heaven and abandoned His responsibilities. He finds himself the only person capable of tracking God down, demanding answers, and making Him answer for His dereliction of duty. Accompanying Jesse on his journey is his former girlfriend and a friendly vampire who seems to prefer a pint in the pub to the blood of the innocent. On his tail is an immortal, unstoppable killing machine named the Saint of Killers – a western lone gunman archetype whose sole purpose is to hunt and kill Jesse.
