Joss Whedon Likens Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice To Age Of Ultron

Now that his work on Avengers: Age of Ultron -- and the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole -- is ostensibly finished, Joss Whedon is relishing the opportunity to enjoy films from the other side of the lens once more. But one genre piece that firmly has his attention is Zack Snyder's hotly-anticipated Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and in a recent interview with Yahoo! Movies the beloved filmmaker sat down to talk about how the DC showdown compares to Age of Ultron, how superheroes at war is an engaging, realistic narrative tenet, and why he ultimately can't retain his excitement for when the two titular titans collide.

Now that his work on Avengers: Age of Ultron – and the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole – is ostensibly finished, Joss Whedon is relishing the opportunity to enjoy films from the other side of the lens once more. But one genre piece that firmly has his attention is Zack Snyder’s hotly-anticipated Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.

And in a recent interview with Yahoo! Movies, the beloved filmmaker sat down to talk about how the DC showdown compares to Age of Ultron, how superheroes at war is an engaging, realistic narrative tenet, and why he can’t retain his excitement for when the two titular titans collide. Ultimately, It’s refreshing to see that, deep down, Whedon has as much passion for the superhero genre as you and I.

“Because they’re bringing up a lot of issues that we bring up in ‘Age of Ultron’ and I think it’s inevitable. People with power, who are good, do not always agree and it makes perfect sense for me that [Batman and Superman] would fight. And besides… Batman and Superman are gonna fight! I’m so excited! I’m so excited!”

Though it’s not his concern given that the directing mantle has been passed to Joe and Anthony Russo, Marvel will explore many of these themes within the upcoming Captain America: Civil War, which will seed the rivalry between Tony Stark and Steve Rogers’ Cap. It’s arguably one of the most significant films on Marvel’s slate, and will no doubt shape the roster – and outlook – of the Avengers moving forward.

Age of Ultron will mark the final outing for Joss Whedon as a director in the MCU, and the filmmaker shared some fascinating tidbits now that his departure is right around the corner. You can check them out here.

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice opens on March 25, 2016.
