What if the Allies had lost World War II and allowed Hitler’s totalitarian regime to continue unabated? That’s the question posited in the tense first episode for Amazon’s upcoming war-time drama, The Man in the High Castle.

Lifted from the pages of Philip K. Dick’s novel of the same name, the online giant is making a big push for the revisionist episodic series to become one of the service’s flagship products, and with Ridley Scott on board as executive producer, early signs are certainly promising.

Set against an alternate version of 1962, The Man in the High Castle imagines a reality in which the Axis powers – encompassing Germany, Italy, Japan, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria – bested the Allies during the second world war, paving the way for a very strange livelihood. Centring on Alexa Davalos’ San Francisco woman, the series lays the groundwork for some truly rich storytelling by having our protagonist stumble across a video reel that depicts a scenario wherein the Allies lost the war.

It’s a unique premise, and it’s little wonder why Dick’s original novel bagged itself a Hugo Award back in ’63. Can the time-bending story translate to the online template? Time will tell.

The Man in the High Castle has been slated for a premiere exclusively on Amazon Prime from November 20. If you enjoyed the pilot, the second episode will be available to all Amazon customers through Sunday, October 25th. If you miss your chance, Amazon Prime members will have access to this episode and the series when it premieres on November 20th.
