Luke Cage Music Featurette Immerses You In The Culture Of Harlem

Immerse yourself in the hip-hop culture of Harlem with today's brand new featurette for Marvel's Luke Cage series.

From camerawork to general world-building, there are scores of factors that contribute to the identity of any given series. Think about the grimy, neon-drenched streets of Marvel’s Daredevil or the vast, sweeping action shots synonymous with Game of Thrones. All of this – and more – feeds into the lifeblood of a TV show, something Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker is well aware of.

In anticipation of the show’s premiere late next month, Netflix has rolled out a new featurette that places a laser focus on the music of Luke Cage and, specifically, how the “big beats and bigger beat downs” go some ways to shaping Mike Colter’s Harlem Hero. That’s a creative process that takes center stage in the video above, as Coker looks to bottle the fizzy energy of hip-hop music and use it in such a way to amplify the superhero drama.

Given the stature of Colter’s musclebound lead, it won’t take much to frame Marvel’s Power Man as a bona fide scene-stealer. He is, without question, Marvel’s street level hero, one who isn’t afraid to roll up his sleeves and clean up the streets of NYC on his lonesome – unbreakable skin sure helps, of course.

Also starring Simone Missick, Theo Rossi, Frank Whaley, Erik LaRay Harvey, with Rosario Dawson, Frankie Faison, and Alfre Woodard, look for Luke Cage to muscle his way onto Netflix come September 30. Mike Colter’s Hero for Hire will come in swinging, too, as the show’s first official clip showcased earlier this week.
