Hailing from Sony Pictures, this is the second high-profile space vehicle to emerge from the studio after Passengers, Morten Tyldum’s upcoming thriller that brings together Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence. That’ll bow in December, but when it comes to Life, Sony has assembled Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds and Rebecca Ferguson for a story that involves one of the most historic discoveries in human history: the first evidence of extra-terrestrial activity.

Stationed on the ISS, those aforementioned crew members come into contact with a single-cell organism that turns into a biological nightmare. As this is only a teaser, it’s difficult to gauge how exactly the alien threat affects humans, but from the heated exchanges between the crew, Sony’s thriller is shaping up to be a modern riff on John Carpenter’s The Thing, trading the icy frontier of Antarctica for the frontier of space. Penned by Deadpool scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, there’s also an inspiring extract from JFK’s famous speech in the backdrop for added effect.

Also starring Olga Dykhovichnaya and Ariyon Bakare, Life‘s official logline teases the expedition of a “six-member crew of the International Space Station that is on the cutting edge of one of the most important discoveries in human history: the first evidence of extraterrestrial life on Mars. As the crew begins to conduct research, their methods end up having unintended consequences and the life form proves more intelligent than anyone ever expected.”

“This nation will continue to be a pioneer in this new frontier of space.” Life will find its way into theaters in time for May 26, 2017.
