It was a very merry Christmas for BBC America and Doctor Who. Their latest Christmas special, Doctor Who: The Return of Doctor Mysterio, became the station’s top telecast of the year across all key demos, delivering 1.7 million views. It was also the number one social program on Christmas across both Facebook and Twitter. Quite impressive, eh?
The holiday-themed special followed the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) as he joined forces with a mysterious masked superhero known as The Ghost (Justin Chatwin) in the heart of New York City. Also accompanied by Nardole (Matt Lucas), the Doctor had to swat off brain-swapping aliens poised to attack the planet in an effort to save Manhattan and the world.
While the newest Christmas special was greeted warmly elsewhere, our own David James met it with a lukewarm response, praising the “broadly entertaining” concept of “Superman meets Doctor Who,” but ultimately finding it to be a “wasted opportunity to do something interesting with the two.” Hopefully, the upcoming tenth season – whenever it decides to premiere – will be a bit of an improvement. We’ve heard it may arrive in April of 2017, but the BBC has yet to reveal an official date.
