Miniature multiplayer mayhem returns to PC and consoles this April in the form of Micro Machines World Series, developer Codemasters has announced. If you weren’t old enough to hold a gamepad back in the 90s, it’s unlikely you’ll remember the popularity the series once held, but Codemasters is certainly going to do its best to give you a first-hand lesson of why so many have fond memories of its wacky formula.
Scheduled to drop on April 21 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC, World Series will retain the same “manic social game play of the classic series, but will bring a new dimension to the experience with stunning HD visuals,” reads the announcement. As was the case with the originals, players will return to the much-loved household environments of yesteryear, with kitchen tables, garden sheds and hazardous snooker tables just some of the surfaces shown off in the reveal trailer (above). Along with the return of classic modes Race and Elimination, Codemasters is aiming to spice things up with some additional extras, including Battle Mode.
Taking place in specially tailored arenas, the aim of the game is simple: to smash your opponent into smithereens as part of a team or solo. King of the Hill and Capture the Flag modes are to be included too, which enable the use of unique vehicle skills to gain the upper hand. While consoles have been devoid of any Micro Machines love for over a decade, last year saw the studio partner with EA to release a mobile iteration of the series, the success of which led to World Series, says Codemasters VP of publishing, Jonathan Bunney.
The original Micro Machines was a breakthrough multiplayer racing game and remains much loved in the gaming community. We saw great success last year with our free-to-play mobile game, but this brand new console title takes the franchise to its greatest levels of multiplayer mayhem and enables you to play with your friends on the same sofa or across the world.
We suspect Codemasters will have more to share on Micro Machines World Series in the near future, what with its relatively close release date, and we’re surely not the only ones that can’t wait to relive a slice of the 90s come April.
