Last time Jonah Hill and La La Land‘s Emma Stone shared the screen, the pair found themselves overcome with teenage angst in Greg Mottola’s Superbad. Ten years later, Hill and Stone are poised to reunite for Maniac, a straight-to-series dark comedy that has set up shop at Netflix.

Comprised of 10 episodes in total, Deadline reports that Cary Fukunaga has climbed aboard to helm the entire first season of Maniac, marking the director’s first dalliance with serialized content since the inaugural season of HBO’s True Detective. Fukunaga, who worked under Netflix before for Beasts of No Nation, is expected to get the cameras rolling on August 15th in New York City, when filming will continue through until Thanksgiving.

Patrick Somerville has been elected screenwriter on Maniac, with the eponymous Norwegian series serving as inspiration. It revolved around the character of Espen, a “mental patient at the psychiatric ward who escapes reality and lives in a fantasy world in his mind.” Toeing the line between fantasy and reality, Hill and Stone’s unhinged characters will anchor the drama, and we understand both actors – along with Cary Fukunaga himself – hold executive producing credits on Netflix’s upcoming series.

Netflix is yet to nail down an official release timeline for Maniac, but with an August start date now in place, all signs point to the dark comedy series making its bow in early 2018. As for Emma Stone, the La La Land star is the one to beat in the Best Actress category going into this month’s 89th Academy Awards.
