Your Complete Guide To Every Disney Remake, Sequel And Spinoff In The Works

You might have noticed that Disney are currently in the middle of remaking a whole bunch of their classic animated movies in live-action. The initiative first launched back in 2010 with Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland and really took off with more recent offerings like Cinderella and The Jungle Book. It's easy to claim that this strategy is low on creativity and big on box office greed, but hey, Disney are clearly giving the public exactly what they want, as almost all of the films released so far have been received extremely well, going on to earn positive reviews and bring in solid profits. But what about the reboots of animated movies that have yet to make it to the big screen? The studio certainly has a lot waiting in the wings, and here, we run through all 18 remakes, sequels, spinoffs, etc. that are currently in the works. From The Lion King to Aladdin, get ready to revisit a whole bunch of your childhood favorites as we present to you a complete guide to what Disney's got in the pipeline as far as remakes, sequels and spinoffs go. Mulan Release date: November 2nd, 2016. Crew: Jurassic World scribes Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver are rewriting the original script from Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek. Niki Caro is set to direct. Cast: Though the original film centred around a white merchant falling in love with Mulan, Disney have since confirmed that the reboot will go in a completely different direction and the cast will be entirely made up of Chinese actors. Is it a Musical? Initially, it was believed that the new Mulan would not be a musical, but Caro has since clarified that songs may be added at some point. Worth it? We love the original, but a live-action Mulan has a lot of potential to be a more mature, more action-orientated war movie with an awesome female lead to boot. Let's hope Disney can deliver. The Lion King Crew: Jon Favreau, who found a lot of success recently with The Jungle Book, has been entrusted with a second remake of a beloved Disney property. Catch Me If You Can scribe Jeff Nathanson, meanwhile, is providing the screenplay. Cast: So far, we know that Donald Glover will be replacing the original's Matthew Broderick as the voice of Simba while James Earl Jones will reprise his role as Mufasa. Plus, Beyonce is rumoured to be voicing Simba's beau, Nala. Is it a musical? Unknown. Though we would imagine it'll involve a similar talk/sing approach like The Jungle Book. Worth it? The African savanna setting will no doubt result in some amazing CGI animation, but it has to be said that the original Lion King will be near-impossible to improve upon. For Disney, though, this one is definitely worth it, as it'll surely bring in a wicked profit for them. Dumbo Crew: Master of the macabre, Tim Burton, will be applying his unique touch to Disney's classic tale of the elephant who can fly. The script is written by Ehren Kruger, previously of the Transformers franchise. Cast: Early on in the process, Will Smith was in talks for the lead while Tom Hanks was to play the villain. Now, however, Colin Farrell has stepped in to play Holt, Smith's old role, while Burton regulars Danny DeVito and Eva Green have also signed up. Is it a Musical? Unknown, but seeing as Dumbo isn't particularly remembered for its music, we're going to guess it won't be. Worth it? 1941's Dumbo is a charming film, but it has dated quite poorly in many ways. An updated version would allow a new generation to fall in love with the story. Then again, Burton's involvement is a weird curveball that could end up turning this into another Alice in Wonderland. Aladdin Crew: Bizarrely, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels director Guy Ritchie is rumoured to be helming this remake of the 1992 classic. Frequent Tim Burton collaborator John August is writing the script. Cast: No one has been attached so far, but Disney have promised that the movie will have Middle-Eastern actors in the lead roles. Is it a Musical? 100% yes. Disney is currently looking for talented singers and dancers to play Aladdin and Jasmine. Worth it? This is another unlikely movie-director pairing but, and maybe it's just us, a Guy Ritchie version of Aladdin sounds like a lot of fun. Plus, a new movie could address the original's troubling depiction of the Middle East. The Sword In The Stone Crew: Game of Thrones scribe Bryan Cogman will write the script. Brigham Taylor is producing. No director is currently attached. Cast: N/A Is it a Musical? Too early to say, but we would imagine it won't be. Worth it? There are so many King Arthur movies out there already, so on the one hand, it makes a lot of sense for Disney to produce a new version of their 1963 film which looked at his youthful adventures with Merlin. On the other hand, do we really need another telling of this tale? Pinocchio Crew: The only name attached so far is writer Peter Hedges, previously of About a Boy and What's Eating Gilbert Grape? Cast: N/A Is it a Musical? Quit asking that question, will ya? We don't know! Worth it? Much like Dumbo, Pinocchio is one of Disney's oldest movies, so a reboot has the potential to make the classic story accessible to a new generation of children again, who otherwise might be put off by the previous one's age. There's a lot of inherent darkness in the tale, though, which will be interesting to see brought out - if they choose to include it. Peter Pan Crew: Disney must have been quite pleased with how Pete's Dragon turned out as they chose that movie's director/writer duo, David Lowrey and Toby Halbrooks, to handle another remake about a Pete. Cast: N/A Is it a Musical? Lowery decided to cut the songs out of his Pete's Dragon remake, so we imagine he'll do the same here. Worth it? In the last fifteen years alone, we've had three Peter Pan movies: Disney's own Return to Never Land in 2002, 2003's live-action version and 2015's prequel Pan. What new angle can Disney find to make this project worthwhile? We really can't say, but are certainly curious to find out. Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs Crew: The Girl on the Train scribe Erin Cressida Wilson is in talks to provide the script. Cast: N/A Is it a Musical? No idea at this stage. Though if they don't include "Heigh Ho," at the very least, we'll be surprised. Worth it? The Snow White story is another one that has littered our screens of late, after 2012 gave us both Snow White and the Huntsman and Mirror Mirror. Those two were different slants on the tale, though, so perhaps Disney can win us over with a more traditional version? The Little Mermaid Crew: Hamilton's Lin-Manuel Miranda will be providing the songs alongside the original movie's Alan Menken. Miranda will also produce. Cast: No news on that front yet. Is it a Musical? Totally. Worth it? We're not in desperate need of a new Little Mermaid, seeing as there are already two other versions - an independent production and another from Universal - also in the works. Still, Miranda and Menken will no doubt make this a toe-tapping, enjoyable musical experience. Maleficent 2 Crew: The original movie's writer, Linda Woolverton, has returned to pen the sequel. It's currently unknown if Maleficent director Robert Stromberg - the first film was his only full-length directorial credit to date - will come back. Cast: Well, naturally, this one couldn't happen without the involvement of Maleficent herself, Angelina Jolie. Worth It? Seeing as Maleficent already covered the original plot of Sleeping Beauty, albeit from an alternate angle, we're not sure what point there is in a follow-up. Maybe Disney will pull something out of the hat, but we're not eagerly awaiting this one. The Jungle Book 2 Crew: Jon Favreau will film the sequel to his own reboot. Justin Marks is likewise returning to pen the script. Cast: No one has been confirmed yet, but we imagine most of the original's cast will be back. Namely, Neel Sethi, Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley, Lupita Nyong'o and Scarlett Johansson. We wouldn't expect more from Idris Elba's Shere Khan, though. Worth It? Definitely. The first one was a massive success and Rudyard Kipling had the foresight to write The Second Jungle Book, so they even have source material to work from. It's to be filmed back-to-back with The Lion King, though, so let's hope Favreau's creativity doesn't run dry by the time he gets to this one. Christopher Robin Crew: Marc Forster (Quantum of Solace, World War Z) is set to direct the script from Up's Tom McCarthy. Cast: None at the moment. Worth It? This one is basically a Winnie the Pooh version of Hook, as it will see an adult Christopher Robin returning to Hundred Acre Wood and his old childhood friends. It's a fresh take on the franchise, then, and it will no doubt be as charming for children as the character's adventures usually are, as well as perhaps having a more mature element about recapturing lost innocence. Cruella Crew: Alex Timbers will direct this origin story for the iconic 101 Dalmatians villain. Four writers have worked on the script so far: Aline Brosh McKenna, Jez Butterworth, Kelly Marcel and Steve Zissis. Cast: As she has been for a while now, Emma Stone is still attached to star as the dog-hating fashionista. Worth It? While there have already been two live-action 101 Dalmatians films - starring Glenn Close as Cruella - at least this one will do something new by giving Ms. DeVil the Maleficent treatment. Having the Oscar-winning Stone on board is also a plus, as she'll no doubt be great in the role. Genies Crew: Screenwriting duo Mark Swift and Damian Shannon, previously of Friday the 13th and Freddy vs. Jason, have written the script for this live-action prequel centering on everyone's favourite Aladdin character. No word on a director as of yet. Cast: No one currently announced. Apparently, Disney planned to use the reams of unused material Williams recorded for the original 1992 Aladdin for this project. However, a complication with Williams' will now prevents them from doing so. Worth it? Despite being up for an Aladdin remake, the idea of a spinoff movie featuring the loveable Genie without the late, great Robin Williams sounds terrible. Whoever they cast, no one is going to match up to the original. Rose Red Crew: Screenwriters Justin Merz and Evan Daugherty (the latter of Snow White and the Huntsman) have come up with this Rosencrantz and Guildernstern-like companion movie to the classic Snow White. It'll follow SW's hitherto-unknown sister, Rose Red, in her efforts to save her sibling. Cast: None yet, but considering there's also a live-action Snow White in the works, some of that movie's cast could crossover to this project. Worth it? Rose Red is a Grimm fairy tale character that Disney hasn't tackled yet and the idea of a sidequel to the classic original could be a lot of fun, especially after the success of Maleficent. We'd rather this over a simple live-action Snow White reboot, actually. Tink Crew: Likewise, Disney are also working on this sidequel to Peter Pan focusing on his fiery fairy friend. Finding Dory scribe Victoria Strouse is penning the script. Cast: This one has actually been in the works for a while. From around 2010 to 2012, Elizabeth Banks was all set to star. The last we heard was back in 2015 though, when Reese Witherspoon was lined up to play Tinkerbell. Worth it? Tinkerbell solo movies have enjoyed a lot of straight-to-DVD success for Disney, so this one is probably a safe bet for them. And at least it won't be another straight-laced take on the Peter Pan legend. Night On Bald Mountain Crew: Screenwriting duo Matt Sazama and Buck Sharpless - previously of Dracula Untold (meh), The Last Witch Hunter (also meh) and Gods of Egypt (bleurgh!) - are signed up to provide the script and also exec produce. Cast: Nada at the moment. Though we would expect that the movie's major star - the terrifying demon Chernobog - will be mostly created by CGI anyway. Worth it? Who's idea was it to take the standout, and scariest, sequence from Fantastia and turn it into a full-length feature? This one could go either way, but for now, you can colour us intrigued. Prince Charming Crew: After the success of Kenneth Branagh's Cinderella remake, Disney announced this comedy spinoff about Prince Charming's charmless younger brother who fails to live up to the family name. The script comes from Matt Fogel, whose single previous movie credit is, uh, Big Momma's: Like Father, Like Son. Cast: Currently unsure, but - like Rose Red - it could feature some crossover with a previous movie. In this case, Richard Madden could reprise his role as the real Prince Charming from Cinderella. Worth it? There's a fairly decent comic premise to this one, but we're not convinced it could carry a whole feature.
