Though Bruce Wayne has yet to become Batman in the universe established by Gotham, we know by now that he’ll indeed suit up sometime before the series wraps in 2019. Whether David Mazouz will don cape and cowl or a stuntman gets the honor via an epilogue/time jump remains to be seen, but at least the show will receive a proper sendoff.
For the most part, the bigger villains have been left to Jim Gordon, yet Bruce has had some memorable run-ins with the Joker-like Valeska twins in recent years. In fact, Jeremiah has proven to be very fixated on the would be Dark Knight, seeing him as the brother he never had – in his own special way.
Of course, there’ll be much more to come with these two when the saga resumes, which Mazouz revealed to ComicBook.com at San Diego Comic-Con by saying, “you will definitely see a Bruce/Jeremiah showdown this year.” And when it came to addressing if that’ll top season 3’s Killing Joke-inspired encounter with Jerome, he merely offered a “you’ll have to wait and see.”
Come to think of it, this may’ve been what Mazouz was talking about when recently hinting at the true Joker’s possible arrival, but we can’t be too sure of that at the moment. If it were up to me, I’d allow for Jeremiah to formally take up the Clown Prince of Crime’s moniker, but I don’t have to deal with the red tape that the producers must.
As you may have guessed, this’ll spill over into the Bruce-Selina dynamic too, because, don’t forget, Jeremiah shot the latter in the spine in yet another nod to Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s classic graphic novel. When it came to that area, David had more to tease:
“When we first see them again, it’s gonna be a rocky road because obviously Selina is going to be pretty pissed at Bruce. Ultimately it was Jeremiah who wanted to get to Bruce and that’s why he shot Selina and that’s what put her in this state. Eventually they’re going to be back on the same side, but Selina is gonna be a different person. The way that she fights her way out of a hospital bed forces her to sacrifice some parts of herself and she’s going to be more Catwoman-y, but less somebody that Bruce can be friends with.”
Well, if Bruce and Selina end up heading in opposite directions, at least Jeremiah’s love life may improve if indeed Harley Quinn makes her debut in Gotham‘s fifth season. Then again, this series is known for its curveballs, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
