Season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery looks like it's going to change gears after the wartime setting of the first outing. Though the show's debut was received fairly well, its focus on non-traditional Trek fare alienated some fans, which is possibly why the sophomore effort sounds like it'll travel to some slightly more familiar territory.

Season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery looks like it’s going to change gears after the wartime setting of the first outing. Though the show’s debut was received fairly well, its focus on non-traditional Trek fare alienated some fans, which is possibly why the sophomore effort sounds like it’ll travel to some slightly more familiar territory.

Before we get there though, to mark World Photography Day (which was last weekend), CBS released four behind the scenes shots from the first season, which they claim are their favorite candid moments. Found in the gallery below, my personal highlight is the one of Saru (Doug Jones) giving Sonequa Martin-Green a relaxing massage, mainly because it really reminds me of the excellent Galaxy Quest.

The others showcase the bond between the actors and characters, with another highlight being Wilson Cruz and Anthony Rapp looking tenderly at each other, which has a somewhat tragic pallor given the events of last season. Meanwhile, there’s also a shot showing Jason Isaacs, Shazad Latif and Mary Chieffo rehearsing and Michelle Yeoh chilling out in the captain’s chair.

If we’re lucky, we might soon see some corresponding photos from season 2, which is currently filming. As mentioned above, it promises to be quite a change in pace, as several classic Trek characters are set to debut, including Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike (Kirk’s predecessor as captain of the USS Enterprise) and Ethan Peck as Spock. We’ll also see Rebecca Romjin as the Enterprise’s first officer – currently known only as Number One – and awesome comedian Tig Notaro as Chief Engineer Denise Reno.

With a plethora of Star Trek projects in various stages of production, including a return for Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard and that tantalizingly mysterious Quentin Tarantino movie, it’s truly a fantastic time to be a Trekkie.
