Unless you’ve been trapped in some mind-bending world filled with Daleks, you’ve probably heard the news that Jodie Whittaker of Broadchurch fame is on the verge of becoming the Thirteenth Doctor.

As a matter of fact, she already is Doctor Who, no thanks to the show’s 2017 Christmas Special, but October will mark her true debut as the world-famous Time Lord. And Matt Smith, for one, simply can’t wait to see Whittaker take center stage.

The Crown actor sat down with Variety recently to discuss the Netflix period drama, along with his Emmy nomination. But when the conversation inevitably veered towards Doctor Who, Smith once again lumped praise on Jodie Whittaker, believing that she has all the right qualities to make the perfect Doctor.

She’ll be brilliant. I think she’s got great humor but a real depth and sort of pathos and humanity that I think will lend itself to the character. I’m really excited as a fan, actually. Game on!

Depth, humor, humanity – three quintessentially human qualities one would typically associate with the Time Lord, though Matt Smith stopped short of mentioning anything too specific. Not that he’s privy to any plot details, mind you, given he’s spent the past two years playing Prince Phillip on The Crown.

Closer to home, Doctor Who season 11 will be with us in October, and if you’re wanting to know every little detail of what to expect, earlier this week the BBC published the official list of writers and directors on board for this year’s installment. And let’s just say it makes for quite the enviable ensemble of creative talent, all of which will be overseen by incoming showrunner Chris Chibnall.
