Now, his Dr. Watson, Jude Law, has spoken out about the new film. While chatting to Entertainment Weekly, the actor – soon to be seen in both Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and Captain Marvel – teased what we can expect from Sherlock Holmes 3. In particular, he revealed that the plot will kick off with an estranged Holmes and Watson reuniting.

“We hope to propel the story forward. As always, the essence of the story is their codependency. We’re going to examine — since it’s been several years since we’ve seen them — we’re going to play up the fact that they haven’t seen each other for a long time either.”

This set-up will make a lot of sense to fans of the Sherlock Holmes books, or even viewers of BBC’s Sherlock. Following his faked death at the Reichenbach Falls – as previously depicted in A Game of Shadows – Holmes only returns to London and drops the bombshell that he’s alive to Watson many years later. If you’ll recall, the sequel’s final scene saw Sherlock reveal to the audience that he survived, but Watson was left none the wiser, leaving the door open for this story to play out in the third film.

As well as the dynamic duo of Downey and Law, Sherlock Holmes 3 will once again be directed by Guy Ritchie and is set for a Christmas 2020 release. Last May, producer Lionel Wigram said that filming was set to begin in late 2018 and if that still stands, we can expect more details on the movie to surface over the next few months.
