A Major Batman Character Has Been Confirmed For Gotham’s Season Finale

Even though it hasn't done the greatest job of expressly stating as such, Gotham's fifth and final season has already experienced its share of incremental time jumps. If you'll recall, the premiere teased Jim Gordon, Harvey Bullock, Penguin and Riddler uniting in order to combat a full-scale invasion, before returning to earlier on the timeline. Of course, "The Trial of Jim Gordon" plainly let us know that its concluding moments jumped forward by a month.

Even though it hasn’t done the greatest job of expressly stating as such, Gotham‘s fifth and final season has already experienced its share of incremental time jumps. If you’ll recall, the premiere teased Jim Gordon, Harvey Bullock, Penguin and Riddler uniting in order to combat a full-scale invasion, before returning to earlier on the timeline. Of course, “The Trial of Jim Gordon” plainly let us know that its concluding moments jumped forward by a month.

Oddly enough, “I am Bane” seemed to take a considerable leap forward because the freshly impregnated Barbara Kean was all but ready to deliver her baby. In fact, she did just as much by the time said installment was over, after bravely mowing down Bane’s henchmen while Lee Thompkins pushed her around in a wheelchair.

As fate would have it, the offspring of Barbara Kean and Jim Gordon turned out to be a little girl, whom I assumed to be Barbara Gordon. Well, it turns out my suspicion was correct because, according to TV Line, we’ll see her again in the finale:

“I can confirm that in the series finale, which features a full-decade time jump, we will see a 10-year-old Barbara Gordon, who of course is fated to follow in the bootsteps of Yvonne Craig and Alicia Silverstone.”

Obviously, she’s about seven or eight years too young to be Batgirl, but it’s nice hearing that one more piece of the puzzle has fallen into place. Whether or not she crosses paths with the Dark Knight himself in the finale remains to be seen.

Regardless, there’ll be plenty else to anticipate, as Batman, Catwoman and the Joker will each put in appearances before we fade to black. Truth be told, I’m glad we’re receiving an epilogue considerably lengthier than that of Smallville‘s, effectively allowing us to see the icons these iterations of the characters blossom into.

Gotham airs on Thursday nights on Fox, with the series finale set to debut on April 25th.
