Star Trek: Discovery Showrunner Says A Pike Spinoff Is Possible

Star Trek: Discovery's sophomore run was much better received than its predecessor, in general, but one aspect of it really struck a chord with fans: Anson Mount's portrayal of Captain Pike. Along with Ethan Peck's Spock, Rebecca Romijn's Number One and that beautifully-reconstructed Enterprise bridge, many are saying season 2 was the perfect set-up for a spinoff that follows the crew of the famous Starfleet ship prior to The Original Series.

In fact, a petition calling for CBS to commission such a show has gone down a storm online, with it currently sitting at almost 20,000 signatures. That’s enough to grab the attention of co-showrunner Alex Kurtzman, who revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that “the fans have been heard.” He didn’t confirm that this was something being worked on, but the producer did say that “anything is possible.”

“The fans have been heard. Anything is possible in the world of Trek. I would love to bring back that crew more than anything. It was a huge risk for us. One of the most gratifying things is to see how deeply the fans have embraced Pike, Spock, Number One, and the Enterprise. The idea of getting to tell more stories with them would be a delight for all of us.”

The good news for fans wanting a pre-TOS Enterprise show is that it could easily fit into CBS’ plans to expand Star Trek into a multi-series franchise. Soon, Discovery will be joined by Patrick Stewart’s Picard series as well as a couple of animated shows – adult comedy Lower Decks and a kid-friendly one. Most pertinently, one Discovery spinoff is already on the way in the form of a solo vehicle for Michelle Yeoh’s Phillipa Georgiou.

Pike himself, Anson Mount, has also responded to what the fans want. He shared how touched he was by the petition on social media and, when asked about the chance of a spinoff in person, admitted it’s not up to him as “creative conversations” would need to be had. He did say, though, that he knows there’s more room in Pike’s life to explore before he meets the sad fate TOS laid out for him.
